Hempel, Maersk, and Yangzijiang Shipyard successfully integrate advanced silicone coating into newbuilding process

Hempel, Maersk, and Yangzijiang Shipyard successfully integrate advanced silicone coating into newbuilding process

(IN BRIEF) Hempel has completed the first-ever application of its next-generation silicone hull coating Hempaguard NB on a newly built vessel, Tangier Maersk, during construction at Yangzijiang Shipyard in China, marking a significant step in integrating advanced coatings into newbuilding processes. The project, carried out in close collaboration with Maersk and the shipyard, proceeded without impacting the launch schedule and has already been followed by two additional applications in the same vessel series. The initiative demonstrates how shipowners can achieve optimized performance and energy efficiency from day one while providing shipyards with a competitive advantage, reinforcing Hempel’s role in supporting fuel efficiency and emissions reduction across the maritime industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 3-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Hempel A/S has reached a notable milestone in marine coating innovation by completing the first-ever application of its next-generation silicone hull coating, Hempaguard NB, on a newly built vessel during construction. The initial installation took place on Tangier Maersk, the lead ship in a series of six 9,000 TEU container vessels ordered by Maersk, demonstrating that advanced coating technology can be seamlessly integrated into the newbuilding process from the outset.

The application was carried out at Yangzijiang Shipyard (YZJ) in China in October 2025 through close coordination between Hempel, Maersk, and the shipyard. Despite being the first deployment of Hempaguard NB in a newbuild setting, the project proceeded efficiently and without disrupting the vessel’s launch schedule, highlighting the coating’s compatibility with modern shipyard workflows. Following this successful installation, two additional vessels in the same series were coated in January 2026, with further applications planned throughout 2026.

According to Hempel, this achievement illustrates how next-generation silicone coatings can be introduced at the construction stage when all parties work in close partnership. The approach provides shipowners with immediate benefits in terms of optimized hydrodynamic performance and energy efficiency from the very first day of operation, while also offering shipyards a competitive advantage through the adoption of cutting-edge solutions.

Alexander Enström, Head of New Build at Hempel, emphasized that the project offers a practical model for integrating advanced coatings into newbuilding without causing delays. He noted that the success was made possible through strong collaboration between the coating manufacturer, vessel owner, and shipyard, setting a precedent for future projects.

For Maersk, the application aligns with its ongoing efforts to improve fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact across its fleet. Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, explained that incorporating high-performance coatings during construction supports the company’s broader strategy to enhance vessel performance and streamline operational processes. He credited the cooperative effort between all partners as a key factor in achieving a smooth and effective implementation.

Jie Hong, Director of QA&QC at Yangzijiang Shipyard, highlighted that the project demonstrated the feasibility of applying advanced silicone coatings during newbuilding without causing operational disruptions. He stated that the experience strengthens the shipyard’s confidence in adopting innovative technologies and reinforces its commitment to delivering high-performance vessels.

Overall, the successful application of Hempaguard NB on Tangier Maersk underscores Hempel’s commitment to developing sustainable coating solutions in partnership with industry leaders, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions across the maritime sector.
