Alfa Laval Brew 80 centrifuge enables Stockholm Brewing Co. to expand capacity and boost yields with payback in less than 18 months

(IN BRIEF) Alfa Laval has supplied Stockholm Brewing Co. with its Brew 80 centrifuge, enabling the fast-growing Swedish craft brewery to dramatically increase production capacity, improve efficiency, and maintain product quality as it fulfills a major supply contract with Systembolaget. Since installation in February 2025, yields have risen by up to 25% and tank times have been cut by more than a third, allowing the brewery to brew up to 17 times annually from a single tank. The solution is expected to pay for itself in under 18 months while also extending shelf life and preserving flavor profiles across both bright and hazy beers. With this boost, Stockholm Brewing is now poised to expand its presence across Sweden and beyond.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUND, 20-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alfa Laval has played a central role in helping Stockholm Brewing Co. keep pace with surging demand for its beers, supplying the craft brewery with a Brew 80 centrifuge that has already delivered striking results in capacity, efficiency, and quality. Installed in February 2025, the plug-and-play separation unit is expected to achieve full return on investment in less than a year and a half, giving the brewery the flexibility it needed to meet a major new contract.

Founded in 2012 by three friends, Stockholm Brewing has grown steadily, with annual production reaching around 400,000 litres. When the brewery secured a significant deal with Sweden’s state-run Systembolaget to supply its Italo Pils, rapid expansion became a necessity. The Alfa Laval Brew 80 proved to be the solution, allowing the brewery to ramp up output while maintaining flavor consistency and product stability across its wider portfolio.

Since its installation, the centrifuge has boosted yields by up to 10% for lagers and 25% for dry-hopped beers, while also slashing tank times from 30 days to fewer than 21. In some cases, batches have been completed in just 15 days without compromising flavor. “Effectively, we’ve gained a third more tank capacity thanks to the shorter time each batch occupies the tanks,” explained Michel Wigardt of Stockholm Brewing. “We’re now able to get six or seven more brews out of a single tank each year – taking us from 10 up to as many as 17.”

The unit has transformed maturation processes as well, cutting settling times to as little as two days instead of up to 20. For Michel and his team, the benefits go beyond efficiency. “We can produce more beer, more stable beer, and do it faster,” he said. “Even at this early stage, the payback looks set to be faster than we thought.”

Ease of use has also been a major factor. “The separator has been easy to integrate. Compared to a filter, where so many things can go wrong, this is straightforward – you put beer in at one end, and you get bright beer out of the other. It’s very, very easy,” Michel added.

Most importantly, the Brew 80 maintains the flavor and character of Stockholm Brewing’s range. “Taste is crucial,” Michel said. “The Brew 80 is non-intrusive in terms of flavor. For our bright beers, the colour and taste are even clearer, and we can package the same day with confidence in the final product.” The technology has also proven successful with hazy beers, delivering the desired appearance alongside aroma and flavor stability, while extending shelf life through zero oxygen pick-up and prevention of off-flavours.

With enhanced flexibility and efficiency, Stockholm Brewing is now preparing to expand further across Sweden and explore export opportunities. “When we started, it was about being Stockholm’s beer of choice. That remains true, but now we’re aiming for national and international growth. With the added capacity that Brew 80 provides, we can keep scaling,” Michel concluded. “I’d only ever heard positive things about Alfa Laval – this experience confirms it. The team is nearby, supportive, and always just a phone call away.”
