BASF Launches High-Speed Digital Color Matching Tools for Refinish Industry

(IN BRIEF) BASF Coatings has expanded its Refinity cloud platform with the introduction of ImagePLUS and the next-generation ScanR spectrophotometer, delivering faster, more precise digital color matching for the automotive refinish industry. ScanR offers five accurate measurements in 30 seconds and includes VIN and license plate recognition, while ImagePLUS enhances visualization and simplifies color selection. Fully compatible with previous devices and the automated Alfa CR4/6 mixing system, these innovations help body shops reduce waste, improve accuracy, and streamline operations—reinforcing BASF’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 15-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF Coatings has introduced a new generation of digital color tools within its cloud-based Refinity platform, aiming to elevate precision, speed, and sustainability for automotive refinish professionals worldwide. The latest additions include the advanced ImagePLUS feature and the next-gen ScanR spectrophotometer, delivering unmatched efficiency in color matching and identification.

Refinity now integrates the enhanced ScanR device—an innovative spectrophotometer that delivers five ultra-precise measurements in just 30 seconds. Equipped with automated Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and license plate recognition, it eliminates manual errors and accelerates the process. The device also includes scratch detection and provides access to the industry’s most extensive color database, ensuring exceptional color accuracy for every refinish job.

The new ImagePLUS color feature complements this by offering intuitive, high-resolution visualizations of color matches—even with earlier-generation spectrophotometers. With real-time side-by-side comparisons, complex data interpretation is no longer needed, resulting in fewer spray-outs, faster decisions, and reduced material waste. The tool’s spectral curve analysis and detailed visualization of effect particles and coarseness refine the matching process for optimal outcomes.

“Refinity embodies the fusion of digital innovation and sustainability,” said Chris Titmarsh, Senior Vice President of Automotive Refinish Coatings at BASF. “With our expertise in color and close collaboration with OEMs and customers, we’ve created a digital ecosystem that supports smarter, faster, and more environmentally responsible refinishing.”

Refinity also connects seamlessly with BASF’s Alfa CR4/6 automated mixing system, which can handle up to six color mixes simultaneously. This integration accelerates operations, enhances accuracy, and helps customers reduce waste and support their sustainability objectives.

With these new innovations, BASF is setting a new standard in digital color workflows for body shops, offering an end-to-end solution designed to optimize performance, improve quality, and cut down on environmental impact.
