The two companies aim to jointly launch a maritime laser weapon system, focusing on drone defense for naval vessels, within the next five to six years. Both firms believe their combined expertise in laser technology will lead to the successful creation of this advanced military system.

This announcement follows a recent successful trial, during which a laser weapon demonstrator, developed by Rheinmetall and MBDA, was installed aboard the German Navy’s frigate Sachsen. Over the course of the trials, which ran from June 2022 to September 2023, the system completed more than 100 test firings, showcasing its effectiveness in real-world maritime conditions.

The continuation of this partnership is expected to strengthen the development of next-generation defense solutions, with a particular focus on protecting naval assets from drone threats.
