EC ready to help in the wake of floods in Austria, Czech Republic and Germany

“We very much regret that number of people have lost their lives because of the floods in Austria, Czech Republic and Germany. I send my condolences to their friends and families. In the meantime I would like to reassure them, the communities affected and the political authorities that we, the European Family, stand ready to help where help is needed most.

The European Solidarity Fund of course was set up after the huge floods of 2002 and is intended to help member states and the areas affected get back on their feet and bear the cost of rebuilding and emergency operations. In the meantime, the immediate task is to make sure people are safe and have shelter.”

“Ich bin bestürzt und betroffenen über die Flutkatastrophe in Österreich, Deutschland und der Tschechischen Republik. Mein Mitgefühl gilt alle Betroffenen, vor allem aber den Familien und Freunden derer, die in den letzten Tagen ihr Leben gelassen haben. Ich möchte den betroffenen Menschen und auch den politisch Verantwortlichen versichern, dass die Europäische Familie den Mitgliedstaaten unterstützend zur Verfügung steht und dort hilft, wo wir am meisten gebraucht werden.

Der europäische Solidaritätsfond, gegründet nach der letzten Flutkatastrophe 2002, hilft den Mitgliedstaaten und den betroffenen Gebieten, um nach der Katastrophe wieder Schritt zu fassen und die Kosten des Wiederaufbaus mit zu finanzieren. Jetzt müssen wir alles Menschenmögliche tun, um unmittelbare Gefahren von den Betroffenen abzuwenden und ihnen sichere Unterkünfte zu bieten.”

In principle the countries involved would be eligible as EU member states if they make a request – within 10 weeks of the disaster occurring. The normal threshold for activating the EUSF for the 3 countries is direct damage of more than €1.79 billion for Austria; €872 million for the Czech Republic; €3.67 billion for Germany.
