Deutsche Bahn Awards €100M Maintenance Contracts to Vossloh for Rail Upkeep

(IN BRIEF) Deutsche Bahn has awarded Vossloh over €100 million in contracts to improve rail maintenance using advanced rail milling and high-speed grinding technologies. The agreements, covering preventive and corrective maintenance, aim to extend the service life of DB’s tracks and increase availability. Vossloh’s unique high-speed grinding technology will handle at least 13,000 km of track annually, while rail milling will address deeper defects, reducing costs and environmental impact. This partnership will enhance rail network efficiency and safety across Germany’s busiest routes.

(PRESS RELEASE) WERDOHL, 17-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Bahn (DB) has awarded Vossloh two major framework contracts, valued at over €100 million, to enhance the maintenance of its rail infrastructure through cutting-edge technologies. Vossloh, a leader in rail infrastructure maintenance, will use a combination of rail milling and high-speed grinding (HSG) to extend the lifespan of Deutsche Bahn’s tracks and improve network availability. This collaboration strengthens Vossloh’s position as a full-service maintenance provider for DB.

The first framework agreement focuses on preventive high-speed grinding, covering at least 13,000 km of track annually for two years, with options to extend. Vossloh’s unique HSG technology enables maintenance at speeds of up to 80 km/h without disrupting rail traffic, preventing defects and minimizing future disruptions.

The second agreement, lasting four years with a possible two-year extension, centers on corrective maintenance via rail and switch milling, an efficient solution for addressing deeper rail defects that cannot be fixed by grinding alone. This method reduces costs, track closure times, and environmental impact, as it allows for precise reprofiling of rails without the need for complete replacement.

Heike Junge-Latz of DB InfraGO AG emphasized that these agreements are crucial for ensuring punctuality and reliability in rail traffic by modernizing and maintaining the most heavily used parts of the network. Vossloh CEO Oliver Schuster highlighted the benefits of combining rail milling and high-speed grinding, which will enhance rail safety and operational efficiency while reducing long-term maintenance costs.
