ZEISS reports successful early implantations of AT LUCIA toric 721P intraocular lens for cataract patients with astigmatism

(IN BRIEF) ZEISS Medical Technology has announced successful early clinical implantations of the ZEISS AT LUCIA toric 721P intraocular lens, a new CE-marked IOL designed to treat cataracts while correcting astigmatism. The lens combines an aspheric bitoric optic with ZEISS’ patented non-constant aberration ZO optic design on a fully preloaded hydrophobic c-Loop platform, aiming to deliver strong visual outcomes, reliable implantation handling and long-term rotational stability. ZEISS is conducting an early-access clinical trial with experienced surgeons in six European countries, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Early surgeon feedback has highlighted the lens’ precision, stability, bitoric design, ease of implantation and potential to improve predictability in refractive outcomes. The lens will be showcased at the International Congress of German Ophthalmic Surgery in Nuremberg from June 18 to 20, 2026, and is expected to become commercially available in selected European markets later in 2026.

(PRESS RELEASE) JENA, 11-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ZEISS Medical Technology has announced successful early clinical implantations of its ZEISS AT LUCIA toric 721P intraocular lens, a new lens designed for cataract surgery patients who also require astigmatism correction.

The new intraocular lens combines an aspheric bitoric optic with ZEISS’ patented non-constant aberration design, known as ZO optic, on a fully preloaded hydrophobic c-Loop platform. The design is intended to support strong visual outcomes, reliable surgical handling and long-term stability for patients.

ZEISS is currently conducting an early-access clinical trial with a selected group of experienced surgeons across six European countries: the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surgeons who have started implanting the ZEISS AT LUCIA toric 721P have reported positive early impressions, particularly in relation to precision, stability, implantation handling and visual performance.

Frank Seitzinger, Head of Business Sector Surgery Anterior Segment at ZEISS Medical Technology, said the strong feedback from surgeons validates ZEISS’ optics expertise in the intraocular lens market. He said the AT LUCIA toric 721P raises expectations for precision, stability and positive surgical outcomes, positioning ZEISS at the forefront of new IOL technology.

The ZEISS AT LUCIA toric 721P will be presented publicly for the first time at the International Congress of German Ophthalmic Surgery, DOC, in Nuremberg, Germany, from June 18 to 20, 2026. The lens is currently CE marked and is expected to become commercially available in selected European countries later in 2026.

Dr Andrea Janeková, Head of the Center for Cataract, Refractive and Vitreoretinal Surgery at Eye Center Prague in the Czech Republic, was the first surgeon worldwide to implant the ZEISS AT LUCIA toric 721P. She said the lens combines precision, stability and excellent surgical handling, adding that her first experience suggests it has the potential to become a significant advance for refractive outcomes in modern cataract surgery.

Dr Helena Noguera of Miranza COI Bilbao and Galdácano-Usansolo University Hospital in Spain said the lens stands out for its platform, bitoric design and rotational stability. She said she expects it to enhance the predictability of refractive outcomes in her practice and support reliable visual results for patients.

Prof Sathish Srinivasan, Founder and Medical Director of Ayrshire Eye Clinic in Scotland, said his early experience indicates that the AT LUCIA toric 721P’s non-constant aspheric profile enhances quality of vision. He also highlighted the role of the step-vaulted profile and enhanced haptic-optic junction in improving rotational stability.

Dr Amin-Robert Kassem, Chief Physician and Clinic Owner at Värnamo Eye Center in Sweden, said the lens has shown stability, ease of implantation and consistent visual outcomes in his initial experience.
