Yorkshire flagship office modernised for future growth as Lloyds Banking Group invests in sustainability and next-generation talent

(IN BRIEF) Lloyds Banking Group has completed a £116 million refurbishment of its Halifax headquarters, creating a future-focused workspace for 3,500 employees while preserving one of the region’s most recognisable buildings. The Trinity Road site, first opened in 1974 by the late Queen, retains original architectural features such as its York Stone façade and listed timber interiors, but now incorporates high-efficiency systems including a zero-carbon ground-source heating network expected to cut emissions by over 1,000 tonnes annually. Alongside 100% renewable electricity, rainwater harvesting, and living green roofs, the building now provides accessible facilities, wellbeing spaces, and hands-on development opportunities for nearly 100 apprentices and students. Local leaders and project partners have praised the redevelopment as a successful balance of heritage and sustainability, strengthening employment, skills development, and regional economic impact.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 1-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Lloyds Banking Group has officially completed a major transformation of its historic Halifax headquarters, marking a significant milestone for Calderdale’s largest private employer. Backed by £116 million in investment, the Trinity Road site reopened to colleagues on 1 December, unveiling a modern workplace that blends contemporary design with preserved architectural heritage. First opened by the late Queen in 1974, the building will now support 3,500 staff, including close to 100 apprentices, graduates, and T-level students preparing for careers in digital, business, and cyber disciplines.

The refurbishment spans 317,000 square feet and has been designed to reflect the site’s heritage while preparing it for the future. Original features including the notable York Stone exterior, listed timber elements, the building’s distinctive glass façade, and the recognisable 5×5 grid lighting system have all been carefully retained. These sit alongside new workplace environments that aim to be more inclusive, accessible, and collaborative. The redevelopment was delivered through a partnership between Lloyds Banking Group, Wates, and Calderdale Council.

Sustainability has been a central focus of the redesign. The renovated headquarters now runs on a zero-carbon heating system powered by deep-ground heat pumps—installed via boreholes reaching depths comparable to the height of The Shard. The system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,000 tonnes every year and enables the building to achieve an EPC A energy efficiency rating. The site operates entirely on renewable electricity and features multiple environmental measures, including recycling stations constructed from 70% recycled plastic mixed with 30% coffee grounds, three living roofs supporting biodiversity, and rainwater harvesting to reduce consumption.

Alongside technical upgrades, the refurbishment prioritises colleague wellbeing and accessibility. New facilities include Changing Places standard toilets, contemplation areas, Braille signage throughout the building, and a free fitness space led by local instructors. The Group emphasises that recommitting to Halifax strengthens its connection to the region while opening doors for emerging talent across Yorkshire.

Sharon Doherty, Chief People and Places Officer at Lloyds Banking Group, described the revamped site as a reflection of the Group’s long-term commitment to colleagues and the wider Yorkshire community, celebrating the balance between heritage and forward-thinking workplace design. West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin welcomed the investment as an important sign of confidence in the region, praising the growth of regional training opportunities and the example set in sustainable innovation. Scott Camp, Managing Director of Wates Smartspace, highlighted the project as the result of a collaborative partnership and a model for how heritage preservation and environmental ambition can align to deliver social value at scale.
