Wood Secures $17M Middle East Contract to Boost Efficiency and Slash Emissions in Petrochemical Sector

(IN BRIEF) Wood has secured a $17 million contract with a leading petrochemical company in the Middle East to improve efficiency and significantly reduce emissions at a manufacturing facility. Over the 18-month project, Wood will provide engineering, consultancy, and specialist technology, including a heat recovery unit designed to cut 110 kilo-tonnes of CO2 annually—equivalent to removing 22,000 cars from the road. By capturing high-temperature flue gas to produce steam, the solution enhances energy efficiency while addressing decarbonisation goals. Leveraging decades of expertise, Wood continues to drive innovation and sustainability in the industrial sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) ABERDEEN, 12-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Wood has been awarded a significant contract valued at approximately $17 million by a major petrochemical company in the Middle East to enhance operational efficiency and reduce emissions at a process manufacturing facility. This 18-month agreement reflects Wood’s expertise in delivering sustainable solutions and its commitment to advancing decarbonisation in the industrial sector.

As part of the project, Wood will provide a comprehensive suite of services, including consultancy, engineering, process technology, and specialist equipment. A key component of the initiative involves the integration of a new heat recovery unit into the existing plant, designed to significantly lower carbon emissions. This innovative solution is expected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 110 kilo-tonnes annually—the equivalent of taking 22,000 cars off the road.

Wood’s work began with a series of advanced feasibility studies and the development of an early engineering package. These efforts culminated in the design of a sophisticated system capable of capturing high-temperature flue gas and transferring it to a waste heat recovery system to produce medium-pressure steam. This approach not only reduces emissions but also enhances the plant’s overall energy efficiency.

Daniel Carter, President of Technical Consulting at Wood, highlighted the project’s potential impact, stating, “Optimising process technologies and equipment offers a cost-effective way to deliver immediate and meaningful reductions in emissions for industrial facilities. With the Middle East playing a critical role in global decarbonisation efforts, we are committed to identifying practical pathways to help our clients achieve their carbon reduction goals while maintaining operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”

Wood brings extensive experience to this project, leveraging its long-standing expertise in process technologies and advanced equipment. The company’s track record includes the installation of over 3,000 fired heaters and 450 heat recovery units globally, positioning it as a trusted partner for industrial decarbonisation initiatives.

This contract underscores Wood’s dedication to supporting the energy transition through innovative engineering and sustainable technology solutions, reinforcing its role as a leader in driving decarbonisation across the industrial sector.
