12,500 euros in sponsorship ensures latest congress in 2017 / Commitment strengthens young scientific talent at the Kassel site

KASSEL, 21-Jun-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Wintershall not only produces crude oil and natural gas throughout the world, but also fosters young scientists in Kassel, the home of its headquarters in North Hesse. As the main sponsor, Wintershall is once again supporting the MINT School Student Congress, which is being held from 20 to 22 June 2017 in the documenta city. The congress is being organized by the North Hesse School Student Research Center (SFN). Since 2012, the educational project has been offering school pupils vocationally oriented teaching in the various MINT subject areas (mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology). In addition, the SFN is concluding its first international cooperation with the official signing of the cooperation agreement with Middle School No. 17 from Novy Urengoy, Russia (Kassel’s partner city from Western Siberia).

For Wintershall Executive Board Member Thilo Wieland, the commitment represents an investment in the future of the company and Kassel as a technology center: “As a globally active crude oil and natural gas producer, we are dependent on highly qualified young people, above all from the natural sciences. The SFN performs outstanding work and inspires young people for the MINT professions. True to our maxim “Shaping the future”, we take our social responsibility seriously. Therefore, it’s a great pleasure for us to support the School Student Research Center and thus the careers of junior talents in North Hesse!”

Klaus-Peter Haupt, founder and director of the SFN, is delighted about the sponsorship: “In our daily work we are regularly dependent on the support of sponsors. I’m especially grateful to Wintershall, which has made this year’s school student congress possible.”

This year, the school student congress is being held under the motto “From Earth to the Stars”. The students will be able to learn about current topics in geo- and astrophysics in over 70 workshops, lectures and discussions, as well as gain practical insights into the MINT professions.

Wintershall is also holding specialist lectures and workshops at the student congress. With a practice-led focus, employees from the company will explain to the young people about the exploration of hydrocarbon reserves using hammer-blow seismic surveying or the formation of conventional oil reservoirs. Thanks to support from Wintershall, in recent years the SFN has been able to restore an electromicroscope and equip the school computers with new graphic cards.

Wintershall Holding GmbH, based in Kassel, Germany, is a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF in Ludwigshafen. The company has been active in the extraction of natural resources for 120 years, and in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas for over 80 years. Wintershall focuses on selected core regions, where the company has built up a high level of regional and technological expertise. These are Europe, Russia, North Africa, South America, and increasingly the Middle East region. The company wants to expand its business further with exploration and production, selected partnerships, innovation and technological competence. The company employs more than 2,000 staff worldwide from 50 nations and is now Germany’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer.
