WACKER Unveils Advanced Silicone Solutions for Battery Safety and Efficiency at Battery Show Europe 2024

(IN BRIEF) WACKER, a Munich-based chemical company, is set to unveil its latest silicone innovations at Battery Show Europe 2024 in Stuttgart. The focus will be on ELASTOSIL® CM 185, a new silicone rubber compound designed for battery safety in electric vehicles, preventing fire spread during thermal runaway. ELASTOSIL® CM 181 will also be highlighted for its role in thermal management by filling gaps between battery cells. These products aim to enhance reliability and efficiency in lithium-ion batteries and power electronics.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 18-Jun-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Munich-based chemical company WACKER is set to showcase its latest innovations in silicone products tailored for battery technology and electromobility at the upcoming Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart. Central to their presentation will be the debut of ELASTOSIL® CM 185, a cutting-edge silicone rubber compound designed specifically to enhance battery safety in electric vehicles. This product, along with ELASTOSIL® CM 181, focuses on preventing thermal runaway incidents and ensuring the reliable operation of battery cells.

ELASTOSIL® CM 185 serves as a potting compound for the vent and cell contacting system within lithium-ion battery modules. Its unique formulation, categorized as an RTV-2 silicone rubber compound, offers excellent thermal and electrical insulation properties while being pourable and suitable for automated dispensing. In the event of thermal runaway, this compound helps contain pressure and prevent the spread of fire between adjacent cells, safeguarding the entire battery pack.

Meanwhile, ELASTOSIL® CM 181, another highlight of WACKER’s showcase, is tailored for filling gaps between battery cells. This addition-curing silicone rubber compound features low viscosity and a lightweight filler, ensuring effective thermal management by isolating cells electrically and mechanically. It absorbs vibrations, shocks, and thermal expansions without compromising the integrity of the cell assembly.

In addition to these advancements, WACKER will also exhibit silicone resin binders for heat-resistant coatings, thermally conductive gap fillers, and sealants, all aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of lithium-ion batteries and power electronics.

Visit WACKER at Booth C-50 in Hall 10 at Battery Show Europe 2024 to explore their comprehensive range of silicone solutions for the evolving electric vehicle market.

ELASTOSIL® CM 181

The second product highlight to be presented by WACKER at this year’s Battery Show is ELASTOSIL® CM 181. This addition-curing RTV-2 silicone rubber compound rapidly crosslinks to an elastomer at room temperature. The compound has a low viscosity and is very easy to pour. Formulated with a lightweight filler, ELASTOSIL® CM 181 has a defined pore structure that lowers the density of the cured rubber and renders it compressible. The silicone compound also contains a heat-absorbing filler.

This property set renders ELASTOSIL® CM 181 the ideal candidate for filling the gaps between cells in the battery pack or module. Potting serves to isolate the cells electrically and thermally while also providing mechanical support and a protective function. As a result, vibrations, shocks, and thermal expansion of the cells can be absorbed and counterbalanced, without the cell assembly being placed under mechanical stress. In addition, the thermally insulating silicone elastomer hinders further heat transfer via the side-walls of the cells. Potting the spaces between the cells with ELASTOSIL® CM 181 thus ensures more reliable battery-cell operation.

Further Products at the WACKER Booth

Aside from the two aforementioned potting compounds, the chemical group will be showing further silicone products aimed at the battery and electric vehicle sector:

  • Silicone resin binders for heat-resistant coatings for battery covers or mats made from fiber-based composite materials that are inserted into the gap between the anode caps or the safety valve and the battery cover.
  • Thermally conductive gap fillers and a thermally conductive potting compound for thermal management of lithium-ion batteries and power electronics. These addition-curing silicone products facilitate efficient thermal connection of a component to the temperature-control system.
  • Silicone sealants for different applications relating to electromobility.
