Volvo Group, Daimler Truck and Toyota Join Energy Leaders to Develop Competitive Hydrogen Truck Network Across Strategic European Corridors

(IN BRIEF) Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility, MB Energy and other industry partners are working with German policymakers to create an integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem capable of supporting the large-scale deployment of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks by 2030. The initiative will coordinate vehicle commercialisation, hydrogen production and supply, and the rollout of customer-oriented refuelling stations along strategic European transport corridors, with infrastructure deployment synchronised with the introduction of hydrogen truck fleets. A central objective is to make hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles economically viable by ensuring competitive fuel pricing and a total cost of ownership attractive to transport operators. The partners describe Germany as the first European market to bring together supportive policy, a strong OEM offering and an integrated hydrogen supply and infrastructure chain at this scale, while positioning hydrogen as a complementary technology to battery-electric transport. Full details of the programme will be announced at a CEO-led event during IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover on 15 September.

(PRESS RELEASE) GOTHENBURG, 4-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility, MB Energy and other industry partners are joining forces with German policymakers to accelerate the commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty transport and establish an integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem by 2030.

The initiative brings together vehicle manufacturers, technology suppliers, energy companies, infrastructure providers and policymakers to coordinate the development of hydrogen trucks, refuelling infrastructure and fuel supply across the value chain.

According to the partners, Germany is becoming the first country in Europe to bring together the full set of conditions required to scale hydrogen truck deployment, combining supportive policy frameworks, a strong vehicle offering and an integrated hydrogen supply and infrastructure network.

The programme is intended to complement the expansion of battery-electric transport by creating another scalable pathway for reducing emissions from heavy-duty road freight.

Hydrogen trucks, infrastructure and fuel supply to develop in parallel

The participating companies said successful large-scale adoption of hydrogen-powered trucks requires coordinated investment across several areas rather than isolated development of vehicles or refuelling infrastructure.

The initiative will therefore focus on commercialising competitive hydrogen-powered trucks, deploying refuelling stations in locations aligned with customer demand and ensuring reliable access to hydrogen at commercially viable prices.

Refuelling infrastructure is expected to be developed along key strategic transport corridors in Europe, with station deployment synchronised with the introduction of hydrogen truck fleets.

The companies said aligning vehicle availability, infrastructure rollout and hydrogen supply will be critical to ensuring that transport operators can use hydrogen-powered vehicles efficiently from the beginning of commercial deployment.

Competitive total cost of ownership central to market adoption

A major objective of the initiative is to create the conditions needed for hydrogen trucks to achieve a competitive total cost of ownership for fleet operators.

This will require both cost-competitive vehicles and a hydrogen supply chain capable of delivering fuel at prices that support commercial road transport operations.

The partners said a customer-oriented refuelling network will also be important, with infrastructure positioned around the routes and operating patterns most relevant to heavy-duty transport.

By developing vehicles, fuel and infrastructure together, the initiative aims to reduce barriers to adoption and make hydrogen a practical option for selected zero-emission heavy-duty transport applications.

Germany positioned as European hydrogen mobility benchmark

The collaboration is intended to establish Germany as a benchmark for the development of a fully integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem.

Supportive regulation and public policy are expected to work alongside investments from vehicle manufacturers, industrial technology companies and energy suppliers.

The initiative also reflects the view that the transition of heavy-duty transport will require multiple technologies, with hydrogen expected to complement battery-electric solutions depending on vehicle use, range requirements, refuelling needs and operational conditions.

The partners aim to demonstrate how coordinated action across the entire value chain can support the commercial scale-up of hydrogen mobility rather than relying on individual market participants to develop separate parts of the ecosystem.

Major transport and energy companies participate

The initiative brings together several of the world’s largest companies across the transport, automotive, industrial and energy sectors.

Participating companies announced so far include Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility and MB Energy, with additional companies also involved.

Their combined activities will address vehicle deployment, hydrogen technology, production and supply, distribution and refuelling infrastructure.

The collaboration is designed to help establish an end-to-end hydrogen value chain capable of supporting growing fleets of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.

Full programme to be presented at IAA Transportation 2026

Further details of the initiative will be unveiled during a CEO-led press event at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover on 15 September.

The event is expected to provide additional information on the planned deployment of vehicles and refuelling stations, hydrogen supply arrangements and the wider framework being developed to accelerate commercial hydrogen mobility.
