Volkswagen Expands Renewable Energy Support with 26 Solar and Wind Farms Across Europe

(IN BRIEF) Volkswagen is significantly expanding its support for renewable energy projects across Europe, backing 26 solar and wind farms in nine countries, including the Djupdal wind farm in Sweden. These initiatives generated approximately 1.1 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, contributing to the decarbonization of mobility and supporting the Volkswagen ID. fleet. The company’s green power projects are aimed at reducing the CO2 footprint of electric vehicles, such as the ID.4, which has a much lower carbon footprint when charged with EU green electricity. Volkswagen is also enhancing its charging infrastructure and introducing the Volkswagen Naturstrom Flex, a dynamic energy tariff to help customers reduce charging costs.

(PRESS RELEASE) WOLFSBURG, 16-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen is accelerating its commitment to renewable energy by supporting green power projects across Europe, including the Djupdal wind farm in Sweden, part of the continent’s largest onshore wind farm area. Since its start in late 2022, the Djupdal wind farm generates approximately 1,000 GWh (1 TWh) of electricity annually. In total, Volkswagen is backing 26 solar and wind farm projects across nine European countries. These initiatives provided about 1.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024, enough to power 300,000 households and support the Volkswagen ID. fleet in Europe.

Volkswagen’s efforts aim to decarbonize mobility and make electric vehicles more sustainable. By 2024, the projects Volkswagen supports have contributed roughly three TWh of electricity to the European grid, reducing the CO2 footprint of ID. vehicles. For example, an ID.4 running on the EU green electricity mix achieves a significantly lower CO2 footprint compared to a comparable diesel model after 66,000 km. Volkswagen plans to expand its renewable energy projects each year in line with ID. model sales.

The company is also introducing initiatives such as the Volkswagen Naturstrom Flex, a dynamic renewable energy tariff offering customers lower rates during off-peak hours, and an expanding network of over 750,000 charging points across Europe, including more than 4,000 rapid chargers powered by renewable electricity.
