Visa Enhances A2A Protect With Unified Fraud Score and Featurespace Technology

The upgraded solution represents Visa’s first combined in-market offering incorporating Featurespace technology following its acquisition of the fraud-prevention specialist.

A2A Protect uses advanced artificial intelligence and transfer-learning techniques to provide banks with immediate access to global risk insights on account-to-account transactions.

Visa said the approach allows financial institutions to benefit from fraud intelligence without waiting for their own transaction models to accumulate months of data or for other institutions to join a shared consortium.

New fraud score aims to improve detection while reducing false alerts

The enhanced A2A Protect platform combines multiple risk signals into a unified fraud score intended to give financial institutions clearer and faster information when assessing suspicious transactions.

Banks that opt into network-level intelligence sharing can also access additional signals highlighting emerging scam hotspots and coordinated fraud activity across the wider payments ecosystem.

Visa said these patterns can be difficult for individual institutions to identify independently, particularly when fraudsters spread their activity across multiple banks and payment channels.

Mandy Lamb, Head of Value-Added Services at Visa Europe, said fraud is developing rapidly and banks need technology capable of adapting at similar speed.

She said the enhanced platform is designed to help financial institutions identify emerging threats more precisely while protecting customers and allowing legitimate payments to continue with minimal disruption.

Visa reports stronger fraud detection performance

Visa said one major European bank using A2A Protect was able to detect or prevent more than 50% additional fraud while reducing unnecessary fraud alerts by more than 40%.

The company said that, if similar performance were achieved across the wider industry, it could equate to approximately €1.25 billion in fraudulent payments being detected before funds leave customer accounts.

Visa also said A2A Protect has demonstrated a 75% increase in fraud detection during the first six months of deployment.

Fraudulent credit transfers cost consumers and businesses across Europe approximately €2.5 billion in 2024, according to figures cited by Visa.

Featurespace technology integrated into Visa fraud protection

James Mirfin, Head of Risk and Security at Visa, said fraudsters move quickly across different payment types and financial institutions need equally rapid access to risk intelligence.

He said A2A Protect combines Visa’s network expertise with Featurespace technology to provide an additional layer of fraud protection aimed at detecting suspicious activity earlier in the payment process.

The solution is designed to integrate with existing financial institution systems through a single API, reducing implementation complexity and deployment time.

Each alert also includes a plain-language explanation describing why a transaction has been flagged.

Visa said this is intended to help fraud teams investigate cases more quickly and make confident decisions while reducing unnecessary disruption for genuine customers.

Network-level intelligence supports broader fraud prevention

For participating institutions, A2A Protect can use network-level information to identify emerging patterns of organised fraud and scams.

The approach is designed to supplement institution-specific transaction data with broader insights derived from Visa’s payment network and associated fraud intelligence.

Visa said the enhanced service forms part of its wider strategy to provide financial institutions with real-time tools capable of helping prevent fraud before payment transactions are completed.
