VINCI Highways Expands Innovative Predictive Maintenance System to Patras Bypass Tunnels

(IN BRIEF) VINCI Highways, along with its Greek partners Avax, Aktor, and GEK Terna, has introduced its innovative predictive maintenance system to four tunnels on the Patras Bypass as part of a broader initiative to implement this technology across the Olympia Odos highway. The system, known as “Smart Tunnels,” uses sensors and IoT to collect real-time data, which is analyzed by AI to predict equipment issues before they lead to failure. This proactive approach has already shown positive results, including a 30% reduction in equipment failure and a 25% improvement in maintenance response times. The technology was first tested successfully in a pilot tunnel near Patras, confirming its potential to extend the lifespan of tunnel equipment and improve overall operational efficiency.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 8-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — VINCI Highways, in partnership with Greek companies Avax, Aktor, and GEK Terna, has successfully extended its predictive maintenance system to four major tunnels on the Patras Bypass, marking the initial phase of a larger project to implement this cutting-edge technology across the entire Olympia Odos highway. The initiative, dubbed “Smart Tunnels,” aims to revolutionize tunnel operations by ensuring equipment such as ventilation systems, water pumps, and power generators perform at their highest efficiency levels.

Unlike traditional maintenance practices, which rely on repairing equipment only after it fails, this innovative system uses real-time data collected from sensors embedded in the tunnel equipment. These sensors, powered by the Internet of Things (IoT), transmit data to an artificial intelligence (AI) system that analyzes patterns, predicts potential issues, and determines the optimal time for intervention—whether repair or replacement—before any equipment failure occurs, ensuring uninterrupted functionality.

Developed in collaboration with Greek startups ES Systems and Ex Machina, the system was initially tested as a pilot project in a 700-meter tunnel along the Olympia Odos highway near Patras. The pilot program demonstrated the effectiveness of the system, showing a 30% reduction in equipment failure, a 25% improvement in maintenance response times, and a significant extension of equipment lifespan, with batteries lasting 25% longer and pumps and fans showing a 50% increase in longevity.

This large-scale rollout of the Smart Tunnels system is a first for Greece and reflects Olympia Odos’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology for the enhancement of highway operations and the improvement of service quality. As the system expands, all tunnels on the Olympia Odos highway will benefit from the predictive maintenance technology, setting a new standard for infrastructure management.
