Vesteda Gains International Recognition for Sustainable Management of More Than 28,000 Rental Homes

(IN BRIEF) Vesteda has been nominated for an international BREEAM Award in the “In-Use Performance” category for existing buildings, with the nomination covering its entire residential portfolio of more than 28,000 homes rather than a single property. This makes Vesteda the largest certified residential portfolio in the world to be nominated for the award. The company uses the BREEAM framework to assess and improve energy use, water consumption and CO₂ emissions across its housing portfolio. As a result of targeted improvements, Vesteda has reduced energy consumption from 101.9 to 89.1 kWh per square metre, water consumption from 0.84 to 0.70 m³ per square metre, and CO₂ emissions from 23.1 to 19.5 kg per square metre. The nomination is notable because it is not linked to one individual building, but to Vesteda’s entire housing portfolio. This makes Vesteda the largest certified residential portfolio in the world to be nominated for the award, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability and property management strategy.

Vesteda uses the BREEAM framework to identify improvement opportunities across its portfolio, with a focus on energy use, water consumption and CO₂ emissions. By applying insights from the certification process and implementing targeted improvements, the company has reduced energy consumption from 101.9 to 89.1 kWh per square metre, water consumption from 0.84 to 0.70 m³ per square metre, and CO₂ emissions from 23.1 to 19.5 kg per square metre.

For Vesteda, these figures are also connected to the daily living conditions of its tenants. Improved insulation, more comfortable homes, lower energy costs and better neighbourhood environments are part of the wider impact the company associates with sustainable property management. Vesteda says sustainability is not treated as a reporting requirement, but as a central element of responsible housing management.

Astrid Schlüter, CEO of Vesteda, said the nomination shows that the company’s “Housing as a Force for Good” approach is reflected in practical action. She said being able to demonstrate progress across all 28,000 homes gives the company further motivation to continue improving its portfolio.

BREEAM has played an important role in Vesteda’s sustainability work by providing specific questions, indicators and metrics that support operational improvement and standardisation. The framework also enables Vesteda to compare its performance independently with other landlords in the Netherlands and internationally.

Stephan de Bie, Head of ESG at Vesteda, said portfolio-wide certification requires consistent data and a shared methodology across the organisation. He said the company’s progress reflects years of work to build an integrated approach, adding that the nomination both confirms Vesteda’s efforts and encourages further action.

The winner of the award will be announced at the official BREEAM Awards ceremony in London on 30 September.
