VELUX Group Sets Bold Sustainability Milestones with 60% Emissions Reduction and New Circularity Initiatives

(IN BRIEF) In 2024, the VELUX Group achieved a major sustainability milestone by cutting its operational emissions by 11%, bringing the total reduction to 60% compared to 2020 levels. This improvement was largely driven by a transition to renewable energy and enhanced energy efficiency at production sites. Alongside a slight decrease in scope 3 emissions to 1,153kt CO₂e, the company secured a ten-year deal with ArcelorMittal for low-carbon steel, further supporting its decarbonization goals. VELUX also advanced its circularity efforts by launching four projects aimed at exploring new business models in take-back, refurbishment, and maintenance services, while introducing a new methodology to assess and improve biodiversity at key sites across Europe. The Group’s commitment to sustainability was complemented by progress in diversity, with women in management increasing to 31%, and further bolstered by other achievements including a gold EcoVadis rating, a rise in electric vehicle use, and ambitious energy efficiency targets for 2030. Additionally, VELUX joined a coalition to reform Ukraine’s childcare sector, promoting sustainable living environments.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 31-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — In 2024, the VELUX Group made significant strides in its sustainability journey by reducing emissions from its own operations by 11%, contributing to an impressive overall decline of 60% compared to its 2020 baseline. The company’s efforts—mainly driven by a shift towards renewable energy sources and improved energy efficiency at its production facilities—brought operational emissions down from 52kt CO₂e in 2020 to 21kt CO₂e in 2024.

The Group also made headway in addressing scope 3 emissions along its value chain, achieving a modest 0.53% reduction to 1,153kt CO₂e compared to 2023. This progress reflects VELUX’s ongoing initiatives to source and integrate lower-carbon materials, exemplified by a new long-term agreement with ArcelorMittal that guarantees a ten-year supply of low-carbon-emission steel.

VELUX further accelerated its commitment to circularity and biodiversity in 2024. The company launched four innovative circularity projects in various markets to explore business opportunities such as take-back schemes, refurbishment, and maintenance services. These projects are designed to uncover scalable insights across the value chain—from product design to end-of-use. On the biodiversity front, VELUX introduced a new assessment methodology and a catalogue of actionable measures to enhance local ecosystems, with initial evaluations conducted at six sites in Denmark, Poland, Italy, and Hungary serving as a baseline for future improvements.

CEO Lars Petersson expressed his satisfaction with the progress made on CO₂ reductions and emphasized the company’s ambition to drive decarbonization and circularity across the building industry. He also highlighted an important achievement in diversity, with the proportion of women in management roles rising to 31% globally—a milestone that underscores VELUX’s commitment to inclusivity.

Additional sustainability achievements in 2024 include a 3-percentage point increase in both overall women in management and women in senior management, a second consecutive year of receiving a gold rating from EcoVadis, and a boost in the share of electric cars in the fleet by 8.74% following the company’s commitment to the EV100 initiative. VELUX also set an ambitious new target to reduce energy intensity by 56% from its 2015 baseline by 2030 through enhanced energy efficiency and management. Furthermore, the Group joined the coalition behind the Children’s Living Places project, an initiative led by SOS Children’s Villages Denmark aimed at reforming Ukraine’s childcare sector and building homes that promote a low CO₂ footprint and healthier indoor environments.
