Valio Expands Use of Biogas Vehicles as Logistics Fleet Moves Toward Renewable Energy by 2035

Valio currently operates 11 biogas-fuelled milk collection trucks, rising to 13 by the end of the year, while its distribution and delivery fleet will grow from 13 to 23 biogas vehicles. In 2025, Valio Logistics’ biogas vehicles travelled 392,000 kilometres, cutting emissions by 262,000 kg of CO₂e compared with diesel.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 22-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Valio is increasing the use of biogas across its logistics operations as part of a wider transition toward low-emission transport.

The company is replacing milk collection trucks, product delivery vehicles and distribution trucks with lower-emission alternatives, with the goal of moving its transport fleet to renewable energy sources by 2035.

Valio said biogas-powered vehicles can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport by up to 90 percent compared with traditional diesel-powered vehicles. As a result, biogas is becoming a key part of the company’s strategy to cut emissions across its logistics network.

Reducing transport emissions forms an important part of Valio’s broader climate and sustainability work. The company is gradually increasing the number of biogas-powered vehicles in its fleet as it works toward low-emission logistics by 2035.

Valio said day-to-day emissions reductions are being achieved through route optimisation, more efficient operations and the gradual adoption of low-emission fuels as refuelling infrastructure develops.

Mika Jyrkönen, Valio Head of Logistics responsible for product distribution and exports, said route planning and operational efficiency are central to reducing emissions.

“The most environmentally friendly mile is the one that is not driven. That is also the most cost-effective,” said Jyrkönen.

He added that environmentally friendly solutions will help address the remaining emissions from logistics operations.

The expansion of biogas vehicles depends partly on the availability of refuelling stations along transport routes. Valio said refuelling infrastructure must be located in the right places to allow reliable fleet deployment, including during exceptional operating conditions.

Petteri Laine, Valio Head of Logistics responsible for milk collection and transport, said the company evaluates the possibility of switching to low-emission fuels whenever it renews vehicles or updates transport agreements.

“We can add more biogas vehicles as the refuelling station network matures,” said Laine.

He added that Valio’s goal is to gradually expand its low-emission fleet.

Transport companies working with Valio have also adapted to the use of biogas vehicles in everyday operations. The company said gas-fuelled vehicles have proven practical and reliable.

Antero Mansoniemi of Mansoniemi Transport Oy said drivers have found little difference between operating gas-fuelled vehicles and diesel vehicles in practice.

He said drivers were interested in the introduction of new technology and have not had to significantly change their daily routines.

Experiences in Pello and Lapland have also been positive. Timo Pihkakoski of T. Pihkakoski Oy said the vehicles have performed well even in periods of extreme cold.

He said the advantages of biogas vehicles include quiet and fuel-efficient engines and lower emissions compared with diesel vehicles.

Valio said biogas is well suited for heavy-duty transport and can support both short urban delivery routes and daily journeys of more than 100 kilometres.

The company’s long-term goal is for its entire transport fleet to use renewable energy sources, such as biogas, electricity or renewable diesel, depending on the task.

The transition is being carried out gradually. Valio said each vehicle and transport route has a plan for which replacement technology will be used when the time comes for renewal.

For Valio, reducing logistics emissions and fossil fuel use is a continuous development process involving fleet renewal, infrastructure development and efficient transport planning.

Suomen Lantakaasu, owned by Valio and St1 Biokraft, produces liquefied biogas for heavy-duty transport using agricultural and food industry by-products.

Valio currently operates 11 biogas-fuelled milk collection trucks, a figure expected to rise to 13 by the end of the year.

Its distribution and delivery fleet currently includes 13 biogas-fuelled vehicles, with the number expected to increase to 23 by the end of the year.

In 2025, Valio Logistics used biogas-fuelled vehicles to travel 392,000 kilometres, reducing emissions by 262,000 kg of CO₂e compared with diesel.

Valio’s biogas-powered milk collection trucks were driven for more than 2.44 million kilometres in 2025.
