University of St. Gallen welcomes Dr Veronica Vivi Barassi as Full Professor of Media and Communication Studies

(PRESS RELEASE) ST. GALLEN, Switzerland, 1-Apr-2020 — /EuropaWire/ — Prof. Dr Veronica Vivi Barassi has been appointed as Full Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the University of St. Gallen starting 1 April 2020.

Born on 22 January 1981, Prof. Dr Veronica Vivi Barassi is an Italian citizen.

She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Communications at Goldsmiths College, University of London from 2001 to 2004. She received her PhD in 2010 from the same college with the dissertation “Mediated Resistance: Alternative Media, Political Action and Imagination in Britain”. During and after her PhD, from 2008 to 2011, she was Associate Lecturer in the Anthropology Department and Research Associate under Professors David Graeber, Stephen Nugent and Nick Couldry. From 2009 to 2010, she also served as a Research Associate at the Institute of Contemporary European Studies at Regents University London and as a Research Associate at Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre, led by Professors James Curran and Natalie Fenton.

In 2012, Veronica Vivi Barassi was elected Vice-Chair of the Digital Cultures Department of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). She completed her postdoctoral studies from 2010 to 2012 at the Institute of Contemporary European Studies at the European Business School of Regent’s University London. In 2011, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and in 2016 Visiting Professor at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California (UCI). Since 2018, she has been Associate Professor in Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London and most recently Visiting Professor of Information Studies at the University of California in Los Angeles and Visiting Professor of Visual and Media Anthropology at the University of Münster.

Digital citizenship, activism, big data
Prof. Dr Veronica Vivi Barassi’s research focuses on topics such as digital citizenship, activism, big data – and generally on the digital transformation of new forms of society and of governmental, scientific, entrepreneurial and individual action. In addition to her work on social media technologies, she is currently analysing the datafication of citizens, including children. Her current and future research projects include topics on misconceptions and inaccuracies of algorithms and on human-computer relations (“machines care about you”), for example using voice-controlled AIs

Solid teaching experience at all levels
Prof. Dr Veronica Vivi Barassi has solid teaching experience at Bachelor and Master levels. She uses new forms of technically supported teaching. In this way, she helps her students reach their findings through self-experience. In her courses, Prof. Veronica Vivi Barassi cultivates the basics of entrepreneurial action (contract, project applications, budgeting for a question and raising funds for fictitious projects). She teaches specialised courses and basic courses on media as well as social and critical theories (for example Media, Modernity and Social Thought; Media, Rituals and Contemporary Public Cultures Course; Media Research Skills and Approaches). She also supervises doctoral students and is a member of PhD commissions.

In addition, Prof. Dr Veronica Vivi Barassi is a reviewer for renowned publishing houses, including MIT Press, Oxford University Press, SAGE Publications, Bloomsbury and Palgrave MacMillan.
