University of St.Gallen Joins Horizon Europe’s CAPE Project to Advance Sustainable and Secure Cloud Computing

(IN BRIEF) The University of St.Gallen is contributing to Horizon Europe’s CAPE project, which aims to position Europe as a leader in green cloud-computing infrastructure. The university’s team will focus on ensuring secure and sustainable cloud application deployments, supporting CAPE’s goal of enhancing European digital sovereignty through sustainable and efficient edge-to-cloud computing systems.

(PRESS RELEASE) ST. GALLEN, 17-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of St.Gallen (HSG) is proud to be part of the Horizon Europe-funded CAPE project, a groundbreaking initiative designed to establish Europe as a global leader in green cloud-computing infrastructure. With a contribution of 750,000 Euros, the university’s team will play a pivotal role in ensuring the secure and sustainable deployment of software applications in the cloud.

The CAPE project, which is valued at approximately 7.5 million Euros, aims to enhance European digital sovereignty by developing the next generation of edge-to-cloud computing systems. These systems will prioritize sustainability, efficiency, and innovation, addressing the increasing demands of the digital landscape. The project’s core objective is to optimize data center operations, reduce electronic waste, and promote the reuse of hardware and energy resources while integrating renewable energy sources into cloud infrastructure.

A Vision for a Sovereign and Sustainable Future
At the heart of the CAPE project is the design of scalable, open, and disaggregated computing platforms, which will range from embedded high-performance systems to micro data centers. These platforms are intended to empower users to configure infrastructure dynamically, allowing for the flexible adaptation of resources as needs evolve. The project will significantly enhance resource utilization, optimize server and network performance, and support the efficient management of diverse computing environments. Over the long term, CAPE will drive advancements in edge computing, setting the stage for a more resilient and sovereign European digital infrastructure.

The project is poised to have a lasting impact on the future of cloud computing by fostering a collaborative environment and establishing Europe as a leader in sustainable and secure digital infrastructure.

A Strategic Opportunity for HSG Researchers
The University of St.Gallen is one of twelve institutions from seven countries contributing to the CAPE project. The university’s Programming Group at the Institute of Computer Science will focus on ensuring the secure and sustainable deployment of cloud-based software applications. “We are excited to be part of a project that seeks to safeguard European digital sovereignty through the development of a new, secure, and environmentally friendly cloud infrastructure,” said Prof. Dr. Guido Salvaneschi, head of the Programming Group. “This project offers a unique and rewarding opportunity for our students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs to engage with an international initiative that has such a strategic vision.”
