University of Glasgow to Leverage AI and Data Science for Positive Social Impact as Part of Turing Network

(IN BRIEF) The University of Glasgow has been named as a founding member of the Turing University Network, a new network of 36 UK universities created by The Alan Turing Institute to leverage data science and artificial intelligence (AI) for social good. Through the Turing University Network, the Institute will build a structured and inclusive university network representative of the wider data science and AI community in the UK to facilitate better connections across this landscape. The University of Glasgow will join other universities in supporting the Alan Turing Institute and maximizing collaborations and impacts.

(PRESS RELEASE) GLASGOW, 11-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of Glasgow, a major research-led university, is proud to be named one of the founding members of the Turing University Network, a new initiative aimed at leveraging data science and artificial intelligence (AI) for social good. The Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and AI, created this network to foster collaborations with universities across the UK.

As part of the Turing Network Development Awards, the University of Glasgow will join 35 other universities in supporting the Alan Turing Institute and its community, while also maximizing collaborations and impacts. The Turing University Network seeks to create a structured and inclusive network of universities that represents the broader data science and AI community in the UK, facilitating better connections across this landscape.

We look forward to contributing to this important network and working towards positive social change through the application of data science and AI.

Professor Chris Pearce, Vice Principal for Research & Knowledge Exchange, said: “The University of Glasgow is delighted to join the new Turing University Network. The Alan Turing Institute plays a leading role in the Data Science and AI ecosystem, both nationally and internationally. Closer collaboration with the Turing, via this new and inclusive engagement model, will help us to accelerate our research related to data science and AI, and its impact.”

Professor Ana Basiri, of the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences, is the University of Glasgow’s Academic Turing liaison. Professor Basiri said: “Joining the Turing University Network will enable us to develop better connections across the data science and AI landscape and we look forward to the many benefits, including access to both Turing and the vibrant, wider community which will ultimately accelerate our research and impact.

“Our University recognises the importance of Data Science and AI and delivers world-leading, impactful research and innovation in this area. Joining this network, coordinated by the Turing, enables us to align our strategy for AI and have more effective collaboration with other institutions to respond better to a fast-changing landscape of AI research and innovation.”

Donna Brown, Director of Academic Engagement at The Alan Turing Institute, said: “We’re delighted to launch a new UK-wide university network of data science and AI expertise via the Turing University Network. The network is crucial to successful delivery of the Institute Strategy, enables our role as a national convenor in the data science and AI landscape, and creates the opportunity for meaningful collaboration where interests align across research and innovation, skills, and engagement.”
