University of Glasgow academics honoured as new Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences

(IN BRIEF) Five University of Glasgow social scientists have been elected Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences, joining 63 new Fellows across the UK. Graeme Roy, Nicola McEwen, Sotiria Grek, Hervé Moulin and Anja Neundorf were recognised for their influential work in areas such as economic development, public policy, politics and the regulation of new technologies. Carnegie UK’s Chief Executive and UofG Honorary Professor Sarah Davidson was also honoured. UofG Vice President Sara Carter said the recognition reflects the quality and reach of Glasgow’s social sciences, while Academy President Will Hutton praised the collective contributions of this year’s Fellows to addressing major societal challenges.

(PRESS RELEASE) GLASGOW, 8-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Five distinguished academics from the University of Glasgow (UofG) have been recognised for their exceptional contributions to research, policy and public engagement, having been elected Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences. They join a cohort of 63 new Fellows from across the UK who are being celebrated for their influence and impact across a broad spectrum of disciplines.

The UofG academics honoured this autumn are:

  • Graeme Roy, Professor of Economics and Assistant Vice Principal
  • Nicola McEwen, Professor of Public Policy and Governance and Director of the Centre for Public Policy
  • Sotiria Grek, Professor of Science, Knowledge and Public Policy
  • Hervé Moulin, Professor of Economics
  • Anja Neundorf, Professor of Politics and Research Methods

In addition, Professor Sarah Davidson, Chief Executive at Carnegie UK and Honorary Professor at UofG’s Centre for Public Policy, has also been named a Fellow.

The newly elected Fellows are recognised for advancing knowledge in areas ranging from educational inequality and place-based economic development to human rights, technological regulation and welfare reform. Their election highlights the central role that social science plays in addressing societal challenges, informing policy, and contributing to innovation across multiple sectors.

Professor Sara Carter, Vice President and Head of the College of Social Sciences at UofG, said: “I am delighted that five of my esteemed colleagues have been elected as Fellows of this prestigious academy. Their achievements underline the strength of social sciences at Glasgow and the profound impact of our research and teaching on policy and society.”

President of the Academy of Social Sciences, Will Hutton FAcSS, added: “It’s a pleasure to welcome these 63 leading social scientists to the Academy’s Fellowship. Their research and practice have made substantial contributions to society in areas ranging from international trade policy to governing digital technologies. We look forward to working with them to further promote the vital role of social sciences.”

The Academy’s Fellowship now comprises around 1,700 leading social scientists spanning academia, public life, business and the third sector. Fellows are elected following independent peer review in recognition of their excellence, impact and their contribution to the advancement of the social sciences for public benefit.
