University of Bristol to award honorary degrees on ceremonies in the Wills Memorial Building

The University of Bristol is awarding honorary degrees to The Right Honourable the Baroness Hale of Richmond, Keith Warner and Julia Unwin CBE at degree ceremonies taking place today [19 July] in the Wills Memorial Building.

BRISTOL, 19-Jul-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Lady Hale is currently the country’s most senior woman judge and was also the first female Law Commissioner before she became a High Court Judge in 1994.

Lady Hale climbed the ranks going on to the Court of Appeal, the House of Lords and finally to her present role as Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

Having been Chancellor of the University of Bristol from 2004 to 2016, she today receives an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of her contribution to the university.

Keith Warner is a British opera director who has directed more than 150 operas in 20 countries across the world, including productions of Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Bayreuth Festival and Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Royal Opera House.

He also wrote the librettos to three operas by David Blake and has held a number of director roles for organisations such as English National Opera (where he helped to establish its outreach programme), New Sussex Opera, Nexus Opera, Opera Omaha and Welsh National Opera.

Keith graduated in English and Drama from the University of Bristol in 1978 and today returns to receive a Doctor of Music.

Julia Unwin CBE was Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, for which she oversaw the development of a comprehensive strategy to solve UK poverty.

Julia served on the Board of the Housing Corporation between 1992 and 2002 and was also a Charity Commissioner.

Having written and consulted extensively on issues of governance and board behaviour, Julia is now Chair of the Independent Panel on the Future of Civil Society.

She also serves as a non-executive director on two commercial boards and is today awarded a Doctor of Laws honorary degree.
