Uniper Completes First Phase of Open Season for Wilhelmshaven Hydrogen Import Terminal After Securing Sufficient Market Capacity Reservations

Uniper Completes First Phase of Open Season for Wilhelmshaven Hydrogen Import Terminal After Securing Sufficient Market Capacity Reservations

(IN BRIEF) Uniper Hydrogen has successfully completed Phase 1 of the Open Season for its planned Hydrogen Import Terminal Wilhelmshaven after receiving sufficient Expressions of Interest and capacity reservations from market participants to justify continued development of the project. The milestone enables Uniper to move into Phase 2, which will include issuing Heads of Terms and developing the Terminal Use Agreement that will define the commercial framework for future terminal users. Designed with a modular configuration, the facility could ultimately reach an annual import capacity of up to 2.6 million tonnes of ammonia, equivalent to approximately 350,000 tonnes of hydrogen, depending on future market demand. Uniper may also launch additional Open Seasons with different capacity products and commercial conditions if further expansion is required, while protecting the interests of participants in the current process. The successful first phase provides a commercial foundation for advancing permitting, development and commercialisation of the Wilhelmshaven terminal as part of the emerging hydrogen import infrastructure serving Germany and Europe.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 4-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Uniper Hydrogen has successfully completed the first phase of the Open Season process for its planned Hydrogen Import Terminal Wilhelmshaven, after receiving sufficient Expressions of Interest and capacity reservations from market participants to move the project into its next development stage.

The Expression of Interest phase follows the Open Season launched by Uniper in mid-May 2026 and provides the company with the commercial basis to continue progressing the proposed terminal through development, permitting and commercialisation.

According to Uniper, the level of requested capacity confirms market interest in the project and supports the transition from Phase 1 into Phase 2 of the Open Season process.

Phase 2 to focus on Heads of Terms and Terminal Use Agreement

With the Expression of Interest stage now completed, Uniper will move forward with the next phase of commercial development.

Phase 2 will include the issuance of Heads of Terms to participating market parties and the development of a Terminal Use Agreement that will define the commercial framework for use of the future facility.

The capacity reservations secured during the first stage provide Uniper with sufficient confidence to continue the project while further refining its commercial structure and progressing regulatory and permitting activities.

Modular terminal designed for phased expansion

The proposed Wilhelmshaven terminal is being developed with a modular configuration that will allow capacity to increase in line with market demand.

The facility will initially operate at a lower import capacity, with the potential to expand to a maximum annual throughput of approximately 2.6 million tonnes of ammonia.

That volume corresponds to around 350,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

The modular approach is intended to give Uniper flexibility to scale the terminal as demand for imported hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives develops.

Additional Open Seasons possible if demand increases

If the market indicates a need for further terminal capacity, Uniper may launch one or more additional Open Season processes.

Future rounds could include different capacity products as well as separate commercial terms and conditions.

Uniper said any subsequent Open Seasons would be structured so that the rights and interests of participants in the current process are not adversely affected.

The approach allows the company to respond to evolving market requirements while preserving the commercial position of customers that participated in the initial Open Season.

Project advances amid growing focus on hydrogen imports

The successful completion of the Expression of Interest phase represents an important commercial milestone for the Wilhelmshaven hydrogen import project.

By securing sufficient capacity reservations, Uniper has demonstrated a level of market demand that supports further development of infrastructure designed to facilitate large-scale imports of hydrogen through ammonia.

The project will now proceed through the next stages of commercial negotiations, permitting and technical development as Uniper works toward establishing Wilhelmshaven as an important entry point for imported hydrogen into Germany and the wider European energy market.
