Umeå University professor Åsa Gunnarsson presented with The Görel Bohlin Award for prominent gender research

Umeå, Sweden, 14-Jul-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — The Görel Bohlin Award for prominent gender research is presented to Umeå University lecturers or researchers who have made important scientific achievements in gender studies. The 2016 award goes to Åsa Gunnarsson, professor in Law at the Forum for Studies on Law and Society.

“Not many people in the world study the tax system from a female and gender perspective. I see this award not only as personal recognition, but also for the field in general,” she says.

Åsa Gunnarsson has devoted several years to contributing to the development of gender studies as a research field at Umeå University, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration and internationalisation within gender studies. Her research spans across a wide spectrum of questions on gender and equality in welfare states and she is also a leading researcher in the area Gender and Taxation.

Award motivation

“Åsa Gunnarsson has both nationally and internationally, with great commitment and courage, contributed to developing and making equality and gender perspectives known in legal scientific research and education.

She has been of crucial importance to the accomplishments made at the Umeå Centre of Gender Excellence and the research programme Challenging Gender. Through several international tax legislative projects and networks, for instance Gender Equality in Revenue Law and Feminist Studies on Taxation and Budgeting (FemTax), she has contributed to tax legislation research around the World.”

Her research has also aroused interest in society. Åsa Gunnarsson has, for instance, been invited to present her research to the Swedish Riksdag and to departments. She has also taken part in UN sessions under the Commission of Women. Recently, she was committed by the European Women’s Lobby as an expert on taxation in a council to develop feminist financial politics in Europe.

Åsa Gunnarsson is at present coordinator for the international research project FairTax, which is funded by the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020.
