The building that houses University Hospital’s surgery department in Ulm, Germany, has been named winner of a new German architectural award for buildings in the hospital and health sector. Wicona contributed with aluminium solutions.
Ulm, Germany, 15-10-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — The German Architects Association’s “Bund Deutscher Architekten” recognizes the building’s outstanding and modern design, which is strongly supported by Wicona-brand aluminium curtain wall and window solutions.
The structure was designed by Munich-based architects KSP Engel and Zimmermann. An independent jury selected the Ulm hospital, giving equal credit to its architects and developers.
Sapa’s Wicona-brand aluminium building systemsThe surgery department counts 15 operating rooms, 235 beds for normal care and 80 beds for intensive care, added to a core building consisting of two-to-three floors – integrating all functional sectors and a “levitating” wing with rooms for patients.
Two local companies were key to the implementation: Wicona, as supplier of aluminium profile systems, and Dodel Metallbau as the fabricator of all metal work.
The Wicona systems implemented were the Wictec curtain wall and Wicline windows. Four warm color tones – yellow, orange, red and brown – bring distinction to the appearance and have been reproduced in the entire complex, assuring an ambiance that is warm and bright.
Opening sashes in varying colors introduce a special color and light play into each patient’s room, making it an exemplary building in the hospital and health sector, as the jury of the award stated in its description. This and the special quality of the design, the functionality and the detailed execution served as the basis for the decision from the customer in Ulm.
