On September 14, TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong organized an enlightening workshop emphasizing the growing importance of ESG trends in the consumer product supply chain. As the world increasingly leans towards environmental consciousness and regulatory compliance, grasping and amplifying sustainability performance becomes crucial.

Charles Ng, Technical Manager of TÜV Rheinland Greater China Softlines, discussed forthcoming chemical testing requirements for consumer products from both regulatory and market perspectives. He also shed light on the Green Claims initiative by the EU, which provides detailed guidelines on the substantiation, communication, and verification of voluntary environmental claims and labels. This initiative aims to prevent greenwashing. Ryan Foo, Senior Technical Manager of TÜV Rheinland Greater China Systems, introduced the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Initiated last December, the CSRD will be effective from 2024. Its impact is not restricted to businesses operating within the EU; it will also influence global companies that collaborate with EU entities. To enhance our workshop’s relevance, we invited Brian Wong, Senior Sustainability Manager of GP Batteries International Limited, and Nigel Yip, Senior HR and Sustainability Manager from Karrie International Holdings Limited. Both shared invaluable insights from their experiences, providing real-world examples of implementing sustainability frameworks.

Additionally, TÜV Rheinland’s hydrogen expert, Rory Meng, graced the conference with a talk entitled “Our Future Energy Fix: Rethinking Strategies and Alternative Value Chains”. He presented a comprehensive discussion on the potential and challenges of hydrogen adoption in Hong Kong, exploring its technological, financial, and geopolitical facets.

In a gesture showing appreciation for unparalleled dedication towards a sustainable future, Master Group and Karrie International Holdings Limited were honored with the “Sustainable Carbon Reduction Strategic Partner” award. Limao Tian, Managing Director of TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong, proudly presented the accolades to Liu Bingyao, CEO of Guangdong Master Group Co. Ltd., and Silvia Chan, Executive Director and Co-CEO of Karrie International Holdings Limited, emphasizing the relentless commitment of these corporations to sustainable measures.

Liu Bingyao shed light on Master Group’s future endeavors, detailing plans to curtail carbon emissions in production. He elaborated on strategies to enhance equipment energy efficiency and the pivotal role of renewable energy in their factories, for reaching carbon neutrality in the long term. TÜV Rheinland stands poised to assist them in highlighting their sustainability measures to prospective clients. Silvia Chan of Karrie International Holdings Limited articulated the increasing demand for system auditing, especially as they branch out their operations to Southeast Asia. With clients expressing a growing need for third-party verification on carbon emissions, she anticipates that collaboration with TÜV Rheinland will intensify in the coming days.

With ReThink HK 2023 having come to a close, the steadfast commitment of TÜV Rheinland Hong Kong, complemented by its partners and participants, is a testament to a promising, sustainable future for businesses and the community at large.
