TRATON GROUP Expands TRATON ONE OS Ecosystem Through Red Hat Collaboration to Advance Linux-Based Software-Defined Commercial Vehicles

(IN BRIEF) TRATON GROUP is expanding the ecosystem around TRATON ONE OS through a strategic collaboration with Red Hat, with plans to incorporate Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System into its common software platform for future vehicles across Scania, MAN, International and Volkswagen Truck & Bus. The initiative advances Linux as a shared technology foundation for TRATON’s software-defined commercial vehicles and is designed to create a more standardized environment for suppliers, technology partners and internal development teams. By using open technologies, clearer interfaces and container-based approaches, TRATON aims to reduce software integration complexity and make new capabilities easier to deploy across brands and vehicle platforms. Customers could benefit from vehicle functions that are easier to maintain, secure and update throughout the operating lifecycle. Red Hat will contribute its open-source, Linux and container-native expertise, while TRATON will retain responsibility for TRATON ONE OS architecture, safety, regulatory compliance and customer-facing functions. The collaboration is non-exclusive and forms part of the Group’s broader software ecosystem strategy.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 9-Sep-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — TRATON GROUP is expanding the software ecosystem around its TRATON ONE OS platform through a strategic technology collaboration with Red Hat, as the Group advances the use of Linux as a common technology foundation for future commercial vehicles.

As part of the collaboration, TRATON plans to incorporate the Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System into TRATON ONE OS, its strategic software platform for future vehicles across Scania, MAN, International and Volkswagen Truck & Bus.

By combining a safety-certifiable Linux foundation with open technologies and standardized interfaces, TRATON aims to create a more consistent software environment for suppliers, technology partners and internal development teams across brands and vehicle platforms.

TRATON ONE OS to provide common foundation across Group brands

TRATON ONE OS is being developed as a strategic software layer for the Group’s future commercial vehicle portfolio.

The platform is intended to provide a shared technological foundation across Scania, MAN, International and Volkswagen Truck & Bus, reducing fragmentation between vehicle platforms and simplifying collaboration with external technology providers.

TRATON said a common Linux-based architecture can help establish clearer interfaces and more standardized development processes across its commercial vehicle brands.

The approach is designed to make it easier for technology partners to contribute new capabilities while supporting greater reuse of software components across the Group.

Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System to support open ecosystem approach

Under the collaboration, TRATON plans to integrate Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System, extending the use of open-source and container-native technologies within its future vehicle software architecture.

Red Hat’s platform is intended to provide a scalable and safety-certifiable Linux-based foundation that can support software updates and integration across multiple brands and vehicle types.

The collaboration forms part of TRATON’s wider strategy to create a more open ecosystem for software-defined commercial vehicles while maintaining responsibility for overall system architecture and vehicle-level integration.

Linux positioned as common technology standard for future vehicles

Commercial vehicles are becoming increasingly software-driven, with functions expected to evolve through updates over the operating life of the vehicle.

TRATON is addressing this shift by combining its commercial vehicle engineering expertise with open technologies and selected external technology partnerships.

Stefan Teuchert, Senior Vice President EE Platform at TRATON GROUP, said Linux provides an open and scalable foundation for TRATON ONE OS.

He said the collaboration with Red Hat is intended to make it easier for technology partners to work with TRATON’s platform and contribute new functions for future commercial vehicles.

Standardized interfaces could reduce integration complexity

For suppliers and technology partners, TRATON sees advantages in creating a common software foundation with clearer interfaces and container-based approaches.

These technologies can reduce the complexity associated with integrating software into multiple vehicle platforms and brands, potentially shortening development cycles and making it easier to introduce new functionality.

A more standardized software environment can also enable internal development teams and external suppliers to work against a clearer set of technical requirements.

TRATON expects this approach to support a broader ecosystem of partners contributing to its future commercial vehicle software stack.

Customers could benefit from easier maintenance and software updates

For commercial vehicle customers, a Linux-based software foundation within TRATON ONE OS could make selected vehicle functions easier to maintain, secure and update throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

As commercial vehicles increasingly rely on software for operational, safety and digital functionality, the ability to update systems efficiently is becoming an important element of lifecycle management.

TRATON said the common architecture could help streamline how new capabilities and software improvements are deployed across its vehicle brands and services.

Red Hat highlights open-source and container-native technology

Francis Chow, Vice President and General Manager, In-Vehicle Operating System at Red Hat, said software-defined vehicles require a flexible and safety-certifiable foundation capable of supporting rapid innovation while maintaining reliability.

He said TRATON’s planned use of Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System will support an open Linux-based architecture designed to simplify partner integration and streamline software updates across the Group’s commercial vehicle brands.

Chow added that the collaboration will bring open-source and container-native technology into the future development of commercial transportation.

TRATON retains responsibility for safety and architecture

TRATON will retain responsibility for the overall TRATON ONE OS architecture, as well as vehicle safety, regulatory compliance and customer-facing vehicle functionality.

The Red Hat collaboration is non-exclusive and forms part of a wider technology ecosystem being developed around TRATON ONE OS.

This structure enables TRATON to work with multiple partners while maintaining control of the core software architecture and the requirements associated with commercial vehicle safety and regulation.

Collaboration supports transition toward software-defined commercial vehicles

The partnership reflects the wider transition in the commercial vehicle industry toward software-defined architectures in which vehicle functionality can increasingly be improved throughout the operating lifecycle.

By establishing a common Linux-based platform and opening TRATON ONE OS to technology partners, the Group aims to simplify software integration across brands while creating a foundation for continuous development.

TRATON sees open technologies, standardized interfaces and strategic partnerships as central elements in building a scalable software ecosystem for future trucks and commercial vehicles.

With its brands Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus, TRATON SE is the parent and holding company of the TRATON GROUP and one of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers. The Group’s product portfolio comprises trucks, buses, and light-duty commercial vehicles. “Transforming Transportation Together.
