Transport for Greater Manchester awards Ferrovial consortium contract to operate and maintain Metrolink tran network

MADRID, 18-Jan-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Transport for Greater Manchester has awarded a joint venture partnership comprising Amey, a subsidiary of Ferrovial Servicios, and global public transport operator Keolis the contract to operate and maintainthe Metrolink tran network,  for up to 10 years. Amey has a 40% stake in the JV.

Joint venture KeolisAmey will be in charge of operating and maintaining maintaining the network infrastructure, which consists of almost 60 miles of track (100 km) and 93 stops, as well as 120 trams. The contract will come into force in July 2017, during the same year as Metrolink’s most recent expansion project is completed. During the term of the contract, a further extension, the Trafford Park Line, will be created, expected to begin operating circa 2020/21.

Inaugurated in 1992, Metrolink is the largest network of its kind in the UK. It comprises seven lines connecting the center of Manchester with other towns in the metropolitan area and the airport. It serves 37 million passengers per year.

This new contract reinforces the position of Ferrovial, through Amey, as one of the leading railway contractors in the UK. Together with Keolis, it has been handling operation and maintenance of Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in East London since December 2014.
