thyssenkrupp Steel Unveils Advanced Annealing and Isolating Line in Bochum to Support Electric Mobility Growth

(IN BRIEF) thyssenkrupp Steel has completed a key investment in its Bochum facility with the opening of a new annealing and isolating line, marking a major step in its strategy to produce high-tech electrical steel for electric vehicles and energy-efficient applications. The new line, with an annual production capacity of 200,000 metric tons, strengthens Bochum’s role in electric mobility and enhances the site’s capabilities in producing premium steel grades. This modernization is part of the company’s broader efforts to optimize its production network and expand its portfolio to meet the evolving needs of the electric mobility sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 25-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — thyssenkrupp Steel has taken a significant step in reinforcing its position as a leader in electric mobility materials with the completion of its new annealing and isolating line at the Bochum site. This state-of-the-art plant marks the culmination of a comprehensive modernization initiative and is now largely operational. The investment, totaling approximately 300 million euros, includes the construction of a highly efficient facility capable of producing electrical steel sheets as thin as 0.2 mm, designed for use in the most demanding applications, including electric vehicles (EVs).

The new line will enable the Bochum plant to produce more than 200,000 metric tons of non-grain-oriented electrical steel annually, fulfilling the growing demand for high-performance materials that support energy-efficient motors and generators. The plant’s continued evolution underscores thyssenkrupp’s commitment to advancing its production network and its steel offerings for the electric mobility sector. The construction of the finishing line, expected to be operational in 2026, will further expand the facility’s capabilities, ensuring a tailored production approach for customer-specific requirements.

Dennis Grimm, Spokesman for the Executive Board at thyssenkrupp Steel, expressed the importance of the modernization, saying, “Our investment in Bochum underscores our ambition to lead in technology and quality, particularly in premium steel grades for electric mobility. These efforts are integral to our Strategy 20-30, which aims to optimize our production network and product portfolio to meet future market demands.”

The modernization also enhances Bochum’s role as a center of excellence for the future of electric mobility and high-strength multiphase steels. With a strong focus on sustainability and efficiency, thyssenkrupp is positioning the Bochum site as a future-proof facility, creating over 200 new, qualified jobs and securing long-term growth for the region. As the market shifts towards increasingly sophisticated electrical steels, the plant is ready to meet the future needs of the automotive and energy industries.
