Thyssenkrupp Steel, E.ON, and König-Brauerei Launch Sustainable Energy Project, Slashing CO2 Emissions by 75%

(IN BRIEF) Thyssenkrupp Steel, E.ON, and König-Brauerei have launched an innovative project that repurposes waste heat from steel production to power the brewing processes at König-Brauerei. The initiative, which includes the construction of a steam transfer pipeline by E.ON, allows the brewery to reduce its CO2 emissions by up to 75%. This project demonstrates how industrial waste heat can be effectively reused for sustainable energy, setting an example for local climate protection and energy efficiency in the Ruhr region.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 31-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a groundbreaking collaboration for sustainable energy use, thyssenkrupp Steel, E.ON, and König-Brauerei have launched a pioneering project that channels industrial waste heat from steel production into the brewing processes at König-Brauerei. This innovative initiative, which involves a new steam transfer pipeline constructed and managed by E.ON, allows the brewery to reduce its CO2 emissions by up to 75%. The waste heat, originating from thyssenkrupp Steel’s energy-efficient production network, is repurposed to supply thermal energy for beer production, making the process emission-free.

König-Brauerei, part of the Bitburger Brewery Group, now operates with significantly less reliance on fossil fuels, enhancing its sustainability credentials. The project not only demonstrates the effective reuse of industrial waste heat but also serves as a model for local climate protection and energy efficiency.

Marc Spieker of E.ON highlighted the project’s significance as a showcase for the heat transition on an industrial scale, while Wolfgang Wiese of thyssenkrupp Steel emphasized the mutual benefits for all involved parties. The initiative, which emerged as a top contender in a federal energy efficiency competition, exemplifies how collaborative efforts can drive local environmental progress.
