thyssenkrupp Elevator to design and install more than 100 elevator and escalator units for the Hudson Yards development in New York

  • Up to 40 TWIN elevators, the world’s only elevator system with two independently operating cars in one shaft, will be installed at 50 Hudson Yards, saving significant space and energy while improving travel times.
  • More than 100 elevator and escalator units will be installed at Hudson Yards, all featuring the industry’s first predictive maintenance system, MAX.

ESSEN, 28-Sep-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — thyssenkrupp Elevator, a world leader in urban mobility solutions, has been contracted by Hudson Yards to design and install up to 40 TWIN elevator systems for its 50 Hudson Yards building; 27 elevators for the 55 Hudson Yards building; and 12 elevator and escalator units for The Shed. Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in U.S. history and the largest development in New York City since Rockefeller Center. The site will include more than 18 million square feet of commercial and residential space, state-of-the-art office towers, more than 100 shops and approximately 4,000 residences. thyssenkrupp will also provide its elevator predictive maintenance service MAX, the industry’s first cloud-based solution, set to reduce elevator downtime by half.

According to Andreas Schierenbeck, thyssenkrupp Elevator CEO, “We are transforming the industry with groundbreaking mobility solutions that address the critical elements for a sustainable urbanization, space availability and transport efficiency. We are very proud for having been selected by Hudson Yards for this mega project, it shows how much building developers are acknowledging our efforts.”

Fifty Hudson Yards is a 300-m tall building, designed to become the fourth largest commercial office building in Manhattan when completed in 2022, and is the centre piece of the Hudson Yards development in Manhattan’s West Side. thyssenkrupp will also provide elevators and escalators for The Shed, New York’s first multi-arts center that supports creative invention and parity across all art forms. Further, thyssenkrupp Elevator will deliver transportation solutions for 55 Hudson Yards, a 51-story, 1.3 million square foot commercial office tower as well as for the one-million-square-foot Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards, anchored by New York City’s first Neiman Marcus.

“Designing a neighborhood from scratch created a tremendous opportunity for the development team to partner with industry leaders, like thyssenkrupp, and build a true 21st century neighborhood,” said Philippe Visser, President of Related Office Development. “Forward-thinking office tenants at Hudson Yards expect state-of-the-art infrastructure and an unmatched employee experience – thyssenkrupp is the type of leading edge company that makes it possible.”

The TWIN elevator system features two cars operating independently in one shaft, making efficient use of available space while transporting up to 40 percent more passengers than conventional elevators. Each TWIN elevator has its own major mechanical and electrical components and shares the same guide rails and landing doors in a single elevator shaft. By reducing the number of shafts necessary, additional floor space is given back to the building, creating additional leasing opportunities.

“The TWIN elevator system is as groundbreaking as the development it is going into, and we’re thrilled that Hudson Yards, the next crown jewel of the New York City skyline, selected TWIN for its 50 Hudson Yards building,” said Rich Hussey, president and CEO of thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas.

Fifty Hudson Yards will be the first TWIN elevator system installation in New York and the second in the U.S. – the TWIN elevators are also being installed at the Coda Building at Georgia Tech University’s Technology Square. Completion is set for early 2019.

thyssenkrupp is also represented in New York’s One World Trade Center where it delivered the fastest elevators in the western hemisphere. The cars are able to reach 23 mph in speed and reach the building’s top in only 60 seconds – faster than famous runner Usain Bolt.

“New York is very special to us, and we are honored that some of the most important or prominent buildings and developments in this great city have entrusted thyssenkrupp to meet their challenging needs,” concluded Hussey.

thyssenkrupp is improving vertical transportation for millions of passengers in the US, having locally some 10.000 employees and full R&D, manufacturing and service capacity. thyssenkrupp recently announced the construction of a 128-m tall elevator test tower in Atlanta.
