The Political Assembly of the European People’s Party (EPP): Delegates unanimously adopted an emergency resolution on counter-terrorism

BRUSSELS, 07-Apr-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — The Political Assembly of the European People’s Party (EPP) has concluded a two-day meeting in Brussels on 4-5 April 2016 discussing policies to combat terrorism and the conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region among other issues.

EPP President Joseph Daul opened the Political Assembly with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack in Brussels. In light of these and others barbaric acts against citizens, EPP delegates unanimously adopted an emergency resolution on counter-terrorism. The resolution stressed the importance of EU intelligence sharing, protection of the victims and their families, swift implementation of existing legislation and adoption of the Passenger Name Record directive. In addition, the EPP supports a liaison on counter-terrorism in Europol’s European Counter Terrorism Centre to monitor foreign fighters, terrorist financing and illegal arms trafficking.

“The safety of our citizens remains our top priority. We must work together at the EU level to protect our core values. The fight against terrorism is above party politics and cannot be trapped in legislative dispute. We do not have time to waste” said EPP President.

Following the recent outbreak of violence in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, EPP representatives adopted yesterday an emergency resolution calling for an immediate cessation of military actions and a return to the negotiation process mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group.

The EPP Political Assembly also adopted a resolution on smart and green cities, presented by the European Democrat Students, the centre-right student political association.
