(PRESS RELEASE) ALLERØD, 20-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant milestone for regional climate awareness, NIRAS, in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and the European Union (EU), successfully brought “The Climate Show” to Seychelles. This event, which has already captivated over 50,000 young people across Europe, made its debut in the Indian Ocean region, marking a new chapter in climate education for the area.

The IOC, an intergovernmental organization representing island states including Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar, La Réunion (France), and Seychelles, has long partnered with the EU, with over 80% of its funding sourced from the European Development Fund. This collaboration underscores the EU’s commitment to the region, which has spanned over three decades.

The show, a blend of cinema, theatre, and live performance, was designed to engage the youth on climate issues, offering a unique perspective that resonates with the environmental challenges faced by the Seychelles, such as heavy rainfall and landslides. Over 600 attendees, including government officials, partners, and citizens, participated in this interactive event, which also featured discussions on the blue economy and climate risk reduction.

This event is part of the broader Facility for Regional Cooperation in the Indian Ocean region (FRCI) project led by NIRAS. The project focuses on enhancing the visibility of EU-IOC cooperation and improving the coordination of regional funds. It also aims to develop future programs under the regional Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) for the IOC.

The success of “The Climate Show” in Seychelles, with additional performances planned in Comoros, Madagascar, and Réunion Island, highlights the importance of youth engagement in sustainable development. The event reflects the ongoing commitment of the IOC and the EU to foster regional cooperation and amplify climate awareness in the Indian Ocean region, particularly as the IOC marks its 40th anniversary.
