Tetra Pak Reaffirms Leadership in Climate Action with Prestigious ‘A List’ Recognition from CDP

(IN BRIEF) Tetra Pak has been recognized once again for its leadership in climate action, earning a spot on the CDP ‘A List’ for the fourth time in five years. This recognition reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to transparency, emissions reduction, and sustainability in the food processing and packaging sector. Tetra Pak’s significant progress in reducing its environmental impact is aligned with its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.

(PRESS RELEASE) LAUSANNE, 17-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Tetra Pak has once again solidified its position as a leader in corporate climate action, earning a coveted spot on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) prestigious ‘A List’ for 2024. This recognition highlights the company’s exceptional performance and transparency in addressing climate change, further underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

The CDP is a globally recognized environmental non-profit organization that encourages companies to disclose their environmental impact. With participation from over 22,000 companies worldwide, the CDP evaluates their efforts based on transparency, meaningful actions, and leadership in environmental sustainability. Tetra Pak’s achievement of an ‘A’ score is particularly notable, marking its fourth inclusion in the ‘A List’ in just five years.

As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident, with extreme weather, rising sea levels, and melting ice, the need for urgent action is clear. The World Meteorological Organization has identified inefficient food systems as a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for around a third of total emissions. Tetra Pak acknowledges this challenge and is taking decisive steps to address the interconnectedness between food systems and climate change, leveraging its unique position in the food processing and packaging sector.

In line with its climate change mitigation strategy, Tetra Pak is working closely with its suppliers, customers, and other partners to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across all scopes (1, 2, and 3) by 2050. The company has already made significant progress, reducing its total absolute GHG emissions across its entire value chain by 20% from 2019 to 2023. During the same period, it successfully cut emissions from its operations by 47%, while also achieving reductions in upstream and downstream emissions by 21% and 17%, respectively.

Francesca Priora, Vice President of Climate & Nature at Tetra Pak, commented, “Our role in food processing and packaging is critical to transforming global food systems. For over 70 years, our technology has been essential in ensuring food accessibility, reducing food waste, enhancing safety, and extending shelf life. But our commitment doesn’t stop there. We are dedicated to lowering carbon emissions and minimizing our environmental footprint. As an industry leader, we have the power to influence stakeholders across the entire value chain. This is why transparency, as promoted by CDP, is so important. Our environmental goals are deeply connected to our broader sustainability efforts, and we are proud to once again be recognized on the CDP A List.”

Tetra Pak also achieved notable success in other key areas of environmental responsibility, reporting on forests and water security. For the second consecutive year, the company earned an ‘A-‘ score in both categories, further reinforcing its leadership in environmental stewardship.

How Does the CDP Score Companies?

The CDP evaluates companies on the environmental impact of their business activities in areas such as climate change, deforestation, and water security. Companies are given scores ranging from A to D- based on the comprehensiveness of their disclosures, their awareness and management of environmental issues, and their progress towards becoming environmental leaders. Companies that fail to disclose sufficient information are given an F.

The CDP continuously updates its criteria to reflect emerging science and feedback from stakeholders, meaning companies must consistently improve to maintain a top ranking. Tetra Pak’s consistent placement on the A List is a testament to its ongoing commitment to enhancing its environmental performance year after year.
