Terna Secures Approval for Major Power Line Modernization Project to Improve Naples’ Electrical Infrastructure

(IN BRIEF) Terna has received approval from the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security for a major project to modernize the 220 kV “Patria – Sant’Antimo” power line in Naples. The project will involve the construction of an 8.5 km power line, 8 km of which will be underground, significantly reducing the visual and environmental impact in urban areas. This project will demolish 18 pylons, freeing up 21 hectares of land and improving the reliability of local electrical services. Additionally, Terna is also modernizing the “Sant’Antimo – Fratta” power line, which will include another 8 km of underground cables. The total investment for both projects amounts to approximately 39 million euros.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 13-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna has received authorization from the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security to modernize the 220 kV “Patria – Sant’Antimo” power line in Naples, a project expected to enhance both the quality and reliability of local electrical services. The initiative, which will see an investment of approximately 21 million euros, involves the construction of an 8.5 km power line, with 8 km running underground. This project will span several municipalities, including Naples, Marano di Napoli, Mugnano di Napoli, Melito di Napoli, and Sant’Antimo.

The shift from overhead infrastructure to underground cables will significantly reduce the visual and environmental impact, particularly in densely populated areas. The demolition of 18 pylons and the removal of over 6 km of existing lines will free up approximately 21 hectares of land. This move is a part of Terna’s broader effort to upgrade and modernize the local electrical network, providing a cleaner, more reliable service.

In the coming weeks, Terna will begin the executive design phase and initiate preliminary activities to prepare for construction, which is set to commence in the next year. This project is part of a larger renovation plan that also includes improvements to the 220 kV “Sant’Antimo – Fratta” power line. In this case, a new 8 km underground line will cross several municipalities, including Sant’Antimo, Grumo Nevano, Frattamaggiore, Frattaminore in Naples, and Sant’Arpino in Caserta. This part of the project will also see a 17.5-hectare area freed up as 17 pylons are demolished, with a total investment of 18 million euros.

Terna remains committed to reinforcing Italy’s electricity grid, enhancing its sustainability, and minimizing the environmental footprint while improving the quality of life for local communities.
