Terna recognised as a global leader in asset management at ITAMS 2020 biennial assessment

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 11-Mar-2021 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna, the company that manages the Italian electricity grid, announces that ITAMS’ 2020 (International Transmission Asset Management Study) biennial assessment confirms its position as a leader in international utilities; planning, execution, skills and innovative digital tools: these are some of the strengths in managing electricity grid facilities and infrastructures. The assessment is carried out by consultancy firm UMS Group Europe, analysed some of the world’s foremost electricity grid operators (Europe, Asia, Middle East).

The qualitative-quantitative assessment carried out by ITAMS is in line with international guidelines and standard ISO 55001:2014 which specifies the requirements for an optimal asset management system within an organisation. Terna – the grid operator managing the largest number of assets amongst the companies assessed – achieved the highest overall score, confirming results that show consistent growth compared to previous editions. Terna’s asset management performance was also above average in all areas assessed.

The areas of strength highlighted by the analysis include: Terna’s excellence in the ability to plan and execute development, renewal and maintenance work on the Italian electricity grid; the quality of its service; the definition of policies for asset life cycle management; the strong push towards the evolution of digital information systems; the introduction and use of tools such as advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to support predictive infrastructure maintenance, as well as the specific technical skills and know-how of the resources involved.

In 2018 Terna, which currently manages over 74,000 km of high and extra-high voltage electricity grid, 888 stations and 736 transformers through 4 control centres across Italy, became the first company in Italy to obtain the international ISO 55001:2014 ‘Asset Management’ certification for its management system for tangible assets, i.e. power lines and substations.

Active for over 10 years, ITAMS is recognised as being one of the world’s foremost authoritative studies of the asset management system for electricity transmission utilities.
