  • Maximum score achieved for specific environmental performance in the transmission sector

ROME, 08-Sep-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna, the Italian national electricity grid operator, is the Italian leader in the Electric Utilities sector according to the evaluation carried out by RobecoSAM, which selects the best companies around the world in the field of sustainability for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability index. The results of the annual review confirm Terna’s inclusion for the 9th year running in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index World. Compared to last year, Terna has further improved its ranking in the Index, with 89 points, moving up from fifth to fourth position (out of 64 companies) thanks to progress in several important sustainability indicators. The result is particularly significant as only seven Italian companies are present in the index, which represents an authority in ranking the 320 world champions for Sustainability, from amongst 2500 large global companies.

“Terna’s inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for yet another year confirms the central importance of Sustainability in creating value for our stakeholders”, – commented Terna CEO, Luigi Ferraris. “We believe that Sustainability is fundamental in combining the objectives of minimising environmental impact and reducing costs for the system as key components of our investments for the Country”.

Another important score was that achieved in the environmental category (95/100), thanks to the climate-change strategy, comprehensive environmental-management and biodiversity-protection systems and specific electricity-transmission parameters. Finally, it is important to note Terna’s score for the new Human Rights category, which was among the highest and was obtained thanks to particular attention paid to human rights, attention which also led to Terna being classified the best Italian company among 3,000 companies worldwide in Vigeo-Eiris’ rating in February 2017.

The RobecoSAM agency evaluated the sustainability performance of the largest capitalisation companies, carrying out detailed analysis of corporate risk-management systems and opportunities regarding the social and environmental impacts of the companies.

In addition to inclusion in the DJSI, Terna is also present in the following international sustainability indices: Euronext (World, Europe and Eurozone), FTSE4Good (Global and Europe), STOXX® ESG (Global, Environmental, Social and Governance), STOXX® Low Carbon, ECPI, ESI (Ethibel Sustainability Index, MSCI, United Nations Global Compact (“GC100”); and in the Italian indices FTSE ECPI Italia SRI Benchmark and Italia SRI Leaders, drawn up only from listed Italian companies.
