Terna Invests €50 Million in Underground Cable Project to Enhance Transmission Efficiency and Reduce Environmental Impact

(IN BRIEF) Terna has announced an investment of approximately €50 million to convert a portion of the “Mercallo – Cameri” power line into a 132 kV underground cable, aimed at enhancing energy transmission efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. The project will involve the removal of over 100 pylons and the creation of 22 km of underground cable, freeing up more than 60 hectares of land. This upgrade will improve the reliability and sustainability of the electricity supply in the Novara province, meet growing electricity demand, and support Italy’s transition to a greener energy future. Construction is set to begin in the summer, with a focus on reducing the visual and environmental impact of the infrastructure.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 11-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna has announced an investment of approximately 50 million euros to upgrade its energy transmission infrastructure by converting a segment of the “Mercallo – Cameri” power line into a 132 kV underground cable. The project, which covers municipalities in the Novara province, aims to increase transmission efficiency while minimizing the environmental footprint of the infrastructure. This move follows the approval of the definitive plans for the conversion, which will affect the municipalities of Borgo Ticino, Varallo Pombia, Pombia, Marano Ticino, Oleggio, Bellinzago Novarese, and Cameri.

By replacing around 24 kilometers of overhead power lines with 22 kilometers of underground cable, Terna will not only improve the region’s electricity grid but also free up more than 60 hectares of land. Over 100 pylons, including 28 located within the Ticino Natural Park, will be removed as part of the project. The removal of these structures will reduce the visual impact on the local landscape while supporting the restoration of natural spaces.

In addition to the underground cable installation, the project will involve the demolition of approximately 21 kilometers of the existing overhead line and a 3-kilometer section of the 220 kV Magenta – Pallanzeno power line. This significant upgrade will contribute to a more efficient, sustainable, and reliable power supply, addressing the growing demand for electricity and aiding Italy’s transition to a more resilient and eco-friendly energy system.

Terna is currently finalizing the preliminary stages of the project, with construction expected to begin by the summer. The project’s implementation will play a key role in reinforcing the security and sustainability of Italy’s electricity transmission network.
