Terna Invests €12 Million in Syracuse Power Line for Enhanced Reliability and Environmental Benefits

This initiative aims to improve the reliability and security of the electricity transmission service. The project involves installing a 5.6 km underground cable to connect the existing Melilli electrical substation to the ERG NuCE utility substation in Priolo Gargallo. Upon completion, Terna plans to remove around 4 km of existing overhead power lines, providing environmental benefits to the area. The planning documents will be available for public consultation, and stakeholders can submit written observations within 30 days. Terna has allocated €3.2 billion in investments to Sicily over the next decade, making it a priority region for development.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 18-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna S.p.A. (BIT: TRN), the first grid operator for electricity transmission in Europe, announces the commencement of the authorization process for the new Syracuse power line in collaboration with the Sicily Region. The project aims to enhance the reliability and security of the electricity transmission service. Terna has now published a notice identifying the potentially affected land plots associated with the project.

With an estimated investment of approximately €12 million, the project involves the installation of a 5.6 km underground cable, connecting the existing Melilli electrical substation to the ERG NuCE utility substation situated within the petrochemical site in the municipality of Priolo Gargallo, Syracuse province.

Upon completion, Terna plans to dismantle approximately 4 km of existing overhead power lines, bringing environmental benefits to the local area.

The planning documents will be available for public consultation at the offices of the Sicily Region, the Department of Energy and Public Utilities, and the Municipality of Priolo Gargallo (SR). Interested parties may submit written observations to the Sicily Region and, for informational purposes, to Terna within 30 days of the notice publication.

In its 2023 Development Plan, Terna has allocated €3.2 billion in investments to Sicily over the next decade, making it the primary investment region in Italy. Terna currently operates a vast network of over 4,500 km of high- and extra-high-voltage power lines and 78 electricity substations across the region.
