Terna Gains Approval for €8 Million Underground Power Line to Boost Energy Security in La Spezia

(IN BRIEF) The Minister of Environment and Energy Security has granted authorization for Terna’s new electricity connection project linking La Spezia and Arcola (SP). With an investment of 8 million euros, the project will involve the construction of a 4.3 km-long underground cable power line, connecting Terna’s “La Spezia” Electrical Substation to the “La Pianta” Primary Cabin owned by the local distributor. This underground and technologically advanced power line, utilizing latest-generation cables with XLPE insulation, will enhance the electricity grid’s resilience in the region, ensuring greater security for energy transmission services, meeting the rising electricity demand driven by the port area’s development in La Spezia and addressing the increased risk of extreme weather events. Terna is set to commence executive design and preparatory operations for construction sites in 2024, with construction expected to span approximately 12 months.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 29-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The Minister of Environment and Energy Security has authorised Terna’s new electricity connection planned between La Spezia and Arcola (SP).

The project, in which the company led by Giuseppina di Foggia will invest 8 million euros, will involve the construction of a 4.3 km-long underground cable power line to connect Terna’s “La Spezia” Electrical Substation to the “La Pianta” Primary Cabin owned by the local distributor.

The new line, which will be completely underground, highly technological and with reduced impact on the landscape, will be constructed using latest-generation cables with XLPE insulation. A reliable, resilient and sustainable solution.

The project will enable increased meshing of the electricity grid in the area to guarantee greater security for the energy transmission service, also taking into account the growing electricity demand connected to future developments in the port area of the city of La Spezia on the one hand and the increased risk of extreme weather events on the other.

In the next few weeks, Terna will start the executive design of the new infrastructure and the preparatory operations to open construction sites planned for 2024. Construction will require approximately 12 months of work.
