(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 15-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Investment Bank has backed TenneT Germany’s inaugural €3.5 billion multi-tranche senior European green bond, marking the largest corporate issuance ever carried out in the corporate debt capital markets in alignment with the European Green Bond Standard Regulation.

The transaction also represents the EIB’s first green bond operation in Germany, reinforcing the Bank’s role in supporting green finance, clean energy infrastructure and deeper capital markets in Europe’s largest economy.

The EIB committed €74 million to the transaction, participating in three of the bond’s four tranches.

The proceeds will support TenneT Germany’s investment programme for the expansion of Germany’s electricity transmission grid. The financing will contribute to onshore and offshore high-voltage infrastructure, the connection of North Sea offshore wind capacity and the integration of renewable energy into the wider European electricity network.

Nicola Beer, Vice-President of the EIB, said the Bank’s support for TenneT Germany’s inaugural European Green Bond demonstrates the EIB Group’s commitment to using capital markets to accelerate critical infrastructure investment across Europe.

“Grid expansion is not a national issue — it is the backbone of European energy security and cutting energy costs,” said Beer. “Without efficient, modern transmission infrastructure, our renewable energy potential goes untapped.”

She added that the EIB is pleased to support TenneT Germany in the landmark transaction and expects to deepen its support for Germany’s grid investment programme in the years ahead.

Through its participation, the EIB is promoting the use of the European Green Bond Standard in European corporate debt markets. The Bank said this helps mobilise additional private capital for the EU’s climate and environmental objectives.

The EIB supports the European Green Bond Standard both as an investor and as a major issuer. To date, it has issued a total of €7 billion under the standard, making it the largest issuer so far.

Dr Markus Binder, Chief Financial Officer of TenneT Germany, said the EIB’s participation is a strong signal of confidence in the company’s strategy and its role in developing Europe’s future energy infrastructure.

“The EIB’s early support and participation, alongside the exceptionally strong demand from other investors across Europe and internationally, underlines that markets recognise TenneT Germany as a trusted partner in delivering the large-scale grid investments that will shape the future energy system,” said Binder.

TenneT Germany issued the €3.5 billion bond across four tranches with maturities of four, eight, 12 and 20 years. The transaction attracted strong investor demand, with peak oversubscription of around 6.3 times across the tranches.

The demand reflected investor confidence in TenneT Germany’s credit profile and its central role in the European energy transition.

The bonds are listed on the regulated market of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange, with expected display on the Luxembourg Green Exchange. They were issued under TenneT Germany’s €35 billion Debt Issuance Programme, Green Finance Framework and European Green Bond Factsheet.

The issuance was carried out in accordance with the European Green Bond Standard Regulation and in compliance with the ICMA Green Bond Principles 2025.

The transaction marks TenneT Germany’s first access to the public debt capital markets. It follows the recent completion of the company’s new long-term ownership structure, with equity commitments from APG, GIC, NBIM and KfW acting on behalf of the German government.

Together, the ownership and financing developments establish TenneT Germany as an independent, investment-grade issuer capable of funding one of Europe’s largest grid investment programmes.

TenneT Germany expects average annual investments of around €13 billion until 2030 as it supports the expansion and modernisation of Germany’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
