Telekom Deutschland now ready to build a first-class 5G network in Germany

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 13-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Telekom Deutschland has just announced it acquired 5G frequencies worth 2.17 billion euros on an auction in Germany. 5G is finally going to be launched in Germany. 4 frequency blocks in the 2 gigahertz band and 9 frequency packages in the 3.6 gigahertz band have been secured by Telekom Deutschland.

Commenting on the spectrum acquisition, Dirk Wössner, Member of the Board of Management of Telekom Deutschland, said:

“We received the spectrum we wanted. After a long auction, clarity now prevails. Now we will build a first-class 5G network for Germany. Our customers can look forward to this.”

According to Wössner, the auction left a bitter taste behind as the network rollout has suffered a significant setback in Germany.

Commenting further, he said:

“The price could have been much lower. Once again, the spectrum in Germany is much more expensive than in other countries. Network operators now lack the money to expand their networks. With the auction proceeds one could have built approximately 50,000 new mobile sites and close many white spots.”

As the next step, following the auction closure, Telekom Deutschland will apply to the Federal Network Agency to make a use of the frequencies bought.

According to Wössner, the telecom wants to get started now. He added:

“For this it is important to determine the framework conditions that were not completely clarified before the auction. Our offer to tackle network expansion in rural areas together with our competitors will continue to apply. We will start talks on this.”

Telekom Deutschland reinstates its offer for joint approach to network expansion in rural areas.

The telecom has already installed its first 5G antennas in test areas in Berlin, Darmstadt and the Port of Hamburg. With this, Telekom’s total number of 5G antennas in operation throughout Europe is already 150. When it comes to Germany, over 80 percent of existing antennas are already prepared for the 5G.
