Swiss National Bank announces renowned economist John B. Taylor as speaker for its Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture Series

ZURICH, 16-Feb-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — For the second lecture in its Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture Series, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) has named the renowned economist John B. Taylor, Professor of Economics at Stanford University, California, as this year’s speaker. The event will be held on 21 September 2017, at 5.30 pm, in the Audi Max room at the ETH Zurich. The lecture is to be conducted in English, and will be open to the general public. In addition to his academic work, John B. Taylor served as an advisor to various US administrations. As US Under Secretary of Treasury for International Affairs, he coordinated financial policy with the G-7 countries from 2001 until 2005.

As an academic, John B. Taylor has made key contributions to the development of macroeconomics. In 1993, for example, he published the famous eponymous rule for setting a central bank’s policy interest rate based on his research in the 1970s and 1980s. More recently, he has devoted himself to studying the causes of the financial crisis, the solution to the too-big-to-fail problem and the low interest rate policy of central banks. In 1984, he was appointed Professor of Economics at Stanford University, California. Before joining Stanford, he held positions at Columbia University (1973–1980) and Princeton University (1980–1984). In 2016, he was awarded the Central Banking Award for Economics by the journal Central Banking for his work on the international monetary system. He is one of the most influential economists in the US and his opinion is highly respected.

The Karl Brunner Distinguished Lecture Series was established by the SNB in 2016 in memory of the internationally renowned Swiss economist Karl Brunner (1916–1989). The series honours academics, whose research has particular relevance to central banking practice. The speaker is announced each year on 16 February, Karl Brunner’s birthday, and the lecture is held in the autumn.
