STOCKHOLM, 26-Oct-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Today (24 October 2016), Prime Minister Stefan Löfven is visiting Iraq. The Prime Minister will discuss developments in the country, particularly the fight against Daesh and the offensive against Mosul, as well as Swedish-Iraqi cooperation, which is to intensify. During his visit to Baghdad, the Prime Minister will have talks with the Iraqi Prime Minister, and the President and Speaker of the Parliament.
The fight against Daesh and the ongoing offensive against Mosul will also be key topics of discussion. Iraq has been severely affected by Daesh’s warfare, but Daesh also constitutes a threat to all open societies, not least in Europe. Sweden is helping in the form of a military training operation, and also in the long term through development cooperation and extensive humanitarian support.”The forces that attack our open societies with bloody acts of terrorism must be combated. The offensive against Mosul is an important step in the fight against Daesh and all players must do their utmost to protect the large civilian population in the city. It is also important that Iraqi leaders work for national reconciliation and reform in the country. This is crucial for long-term, stable development in the country,” says Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
