Sweco to Design Landmark Hospital for Kiruna’s Relocation and Transformation

(IN BRIEF) Sweco has been commissioned by Region Norrbotten to design and plan a new regional hospital as part of Kiruna’s relocation three kilometers east due to the expansion of its iron ore mine. The hospital, expected to be completed between 2029 and 2031, will provide advanced healthcare services in modern, sustainable, and future-proof facilities. Sweco will lead the project with a multidisciplinary team, addressing the challenges of construction in Arctic conditions and creating a landmark building for the new city center.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 20-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of the major urban transformation relocating Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city, three kilometers east to accommodate the expansion of its iron ore mine, Sweco has been entrusted with designing and planning a new regional hospital. The project, commissioned by Region Norrbotten, is set to provide state-of-the-art healthcare facilities and is expected to be completed between 2029 and 2031.

The new hospital will be built in a former mining area and is tasked with delivering the same range of healthcare services as the current facility while featuring improved functionality, streamlined operations, and future-proof infrastructure. Sweco’s mission extends beyond meeting healthcare requirements—it also involves creating a sustainable, resilient, and visually striking landmark that residents of the new Kiruna city center can take pride in.

“We are honored to contribute to this vital infrastructure project for Kiruna. Our aim is to design a hospital that not only meets present-day needs but also adapts to future demands while prioritizing sustainability and robustness,” said Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson, Business Area President of Sweco Sweden.

Sweco’s role as the lead consultant includes responsibility for the program documentation, leveraging a multidisciplinary team skilled in architecture, engineering, and project management. This expertise is essential for addressing the unique challenges of building north of the Arctic Circle, including extreme weather conditions and logistical complexities.

“Our team combines local knowledge with advanced engineering and design capabilities to create a hospital that will serve as a cornerstone of the new city,” added Lökholm Klasson.

The new hospital represents a significant step in Kiruna’s relocation project, aligning with the city’s transformation while ensuring high-quality healthcare for its residents in a modern and inspiring setting.

About the relocation of Kiruna:
The city of Kiruna is located in the north of Sweden, 145 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. It was originally built to serve what is now the largest and most modern underground iron ore mine in the world. For quite many years now, the city has been undergoing a major urban transformation, where the entire town is being moved “building by building” to cater for continued expansion of the mine, which is the town’s primary economic resource. By 2035, the current city centre will have been replaced with the newly developed city centre.
