(IN BRIEF) Sweco has signed an agreement to acquire STEIN Ingenieure GmbH, a German engineering consultancy with around 60 experts specialising in water and wastewater solutions. The acquisition will strengthen Sweco’s presence in Germany’s water sector and expand its capabilities in sewer rehabilitation, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, structural engineering, pipe jacking and inspections of engineering structures. STEIN Ingenieure reported turnover of approximately €6.5 million in 2025, while Sweco’s Germany and Central Europe business area reported turnover of around €271 million. The acquired experts will join Sweco Germany’s organisation of more than 1,800 specialists. Sweco said the deal reflects growing demand in Germany’s water market, driven by ageing infrastructure, climate resilience needs, stricter EU requirements, flood risk, drought and investment in modern water and wastewater systems.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 15-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Sweco has signed an agreement to acquire STEIN Ingenieure GmbH, a German engineering consultancy specialising in water and wastewater infrastructure.

The acquisition will add around 60 experts across several locations in Germany and will strengthen Sweco’s position in the country’s growing water sector.

STEIN Ingenieure’s areas of expertise include sewer rehabilitation, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure, structural engineering, pipe jacking and inspections of engineering structures. The company’s specialists will join Sweco Germany’s organisation, which currently includes more than 1,800 experts.

Sweco said the acquisition will help it capture further business opportunities in a market shaped by infrastructure modernisation, climate adaptation and rising regulatory requirements.

Julia Zantke, Business Area President for Sweco in Germany, said the company is pleased to welcome STEIN Ingenieure’s team.

“Germany’s water sector is entering a period of major transition, with modernisation, climate resilience, ageing infrastructure and stricter EU requirements driving urgent action,” said Zantke.

She added that Sweco and its new colleagues from STEIN Ingenieure will support German water utilities, municipalities and other clients in delivering secure, efficient and future-proof water and wastewater solutions.

STEIN Ingenieure reported turnover of approximately €6.5 million in 2025. Sweco’s Germany and Central Europe business area reported turnover of approximately €271 million for the same year.

According to Sweco, the acquisition marks a clear next step in the company’s German growth strategy. The group said it will focus on expansion in selected areas, including the water market, where the need for modernisation is creating strong demand.

Germany is one of Europe’s largest and most advanced water and wastewater markets. Climate pressures, ageing infrastructure and increasingly stringent requirements are driving investment in water security, network upgrades and more efficient wastewater systems.

Severe flooding in western Germany in 2021, together with recurring droughts and low-water periods since 2018, have increased the need for more resilient water infrastructure across the country.

Sweco provides water management consultancy services to public and private clients, covering clean water access, flood protection, water and wastewater engineering, water resource planning, urban water management and the design of flood protection structures.

The acquisition is aligned with Sweco’s broader strategy of expanding through both acquisitions and organic growth. The company has completed close to 170 acquisitions over the past 20 years.

In 2025 alone, Sweco completed 13 acquisitions, adding approximately SEK 2.1 billion in annual net sales and more than 1,500 experts to the group.
