SUEZ to Supply RATP’s Operations with 100 GWh Per Year of Household‑Waste‑Derived Electricity Through New Long‑Term Agreement

(IN BRIEF) SUEZ and RATP Group have agreed on a 16‑year PPA for nearly 100 GWh per year of renewable electricity generated from household waste. This partnership supports RATP’s ISO 50001‑certified energy management program and its goal to reduce energy‑related greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent by 2027 (vs. 2019), as validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative and in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C objective. Beginning in 2026, SUEZ will draw on its 34 waste‑to‑energy plants in France to supply RATP’s operational and maintenance needs, furthering both organizations’ shared mission to advance the energy transition and decarbonize urban transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 24-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — SUEZ and RATP Group have formalized a long‑term power purchase agreement (PPA) under which SUEZ will deliver nearly 100 GWh of renewable electricity annually—sourced from the recovery of household waste—to RATP Group, the world’s third‑largest urban transport operator. This contract extends up to 16 years, reinforcing both companies’ dedication to sustainable energy.

This PPA dovetails with RATP’s comprehensive energy and climate strategy, which emphasizes boosting energy efficiency and cutting carbon emissions. RATP first achieved a major milestone in 2017 by becoming the inaugural multimodal operator certified to ISO 50001 standards for energy management across its full spectrum of activities—a certification it has since maintained through successful renewals.

Ambitiously, RATP aims to slash its energy‑related greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent by 2027 relative to 2019 levels—a target ratified by the Science Based Targets Initiative and aligned with the Paris Agreement’s most stringent 1.5 °C warming limit.

Starting in 2026, SUEZ will supply this renewable electricity from its network of waste‑to‑energy facilities in France—including several in Île‑de‑France—to power RATP’s operations, maintenance, and station services, thereby further cutting the Group’s carbon footprint.

As France’s leader in waste‑to‑energy, operating 34 plants that process over 3.5 million tons of waste annually, SUEZ continually optimizes site technologies to enhance energy efficiency and lower emissions, supplying recovered energy to industrial partners. This third PPA underscores SUEZ’s strategic drive to accelerate energy‑from‑waste production and long‑term supply.

“Following our initial solar PPA in 2022 and our ongoing wind and hydro partnerships since 2021, this agreement marks another pivotal step in RATP’s energy transition,” said Jean‑Yves Leclercq, Director of Strategy, Finance and Sustainable Performance at RATP Group. “By incorporating waste‑derived renewable power, we reinforce our commitment to raise renewables to 15 percent of our electricity mix by 2030, optimize consumption, and advance greener mobility.”
