Streamlining Recycling: Leadec Launches Digital Waste Management Initiative in German Automotive Plants

The “Digital Waste Tracking” solution developed by Leadec helps to identify potential savings in waste along the value chain.

(IN BRIEF) Leadec, an industrial services provider, is implementing a digital waste management solution at automotive plants in southern and northern Germany. This system enhances waste tracking and material flow optimization, promoting increased recycling rates and reduced disposal costs. Through QR-coded containers and real-time data processing, Leadec aims to revolutionize waste management practices, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and innovation.

(PRESS RELEASE) STUTTGART, 12-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Leadec, the world’s leading service specialist for the entire life cycle of a factory and the related infrastructure, is spearheading a digital transformation in waste management across automotive manufacturing plants in southern and northern Germany. Through the implementation of a cutting-edge digital solution, Leadec aims to streamline waste tracking and material flow optimization, ultimately enhancing recycling efforts.

The innovative “Digital Waste Tracking” system, developed by Leadec, offers comprehensive insights into waste generation within production facilities. Following a successful pilot project, the digital solution has been fully integrated into the waste management framework at the southern German plant since January 2024. Currently, it is undergoing implementation at the northern German plant and is set to commence regular operations by March.

Alexander Bonk, Senior Vice President of Operations at Leadec Germany, emphasizes the transformative impact of the digital solution, stating, “Our digital solution enables comprehensive tracking of disposed residual materials. As a result, our customer can not only reduce disposal costs, but also make production more sustainable overall.”

In a bid to optimize waste management, Leadec employs IoT-enabled techniques tailored to different waste types, ranging from plastics and metals to adhesives and paint sludge. Each waste container and its location are equipped with QR codes for easy identification. Leadec’s team collects the containers directly from the factory premises, utilizes mobile infrared scanners to record data, and weighs the containers.

Real-time data processing on Leadec’s IoT platform allows for precise tracking of waste disposal activities, including container emptying, waste types, and quantities. This data enables service specialists to optimize collection routes, identify potential waste reduction opportunities, and enhance recycling rates along the value chain.

The evolution of Leadec’s digital waste management solution stems from a decade-long partnership with the automotive manufacturer, particularly at the southern German plant. Leveraging practical experience, Leadec has digitally mapped and optimized the entire waste management process, incorporating additional material flows such as mixed scrap containers, waste oils, and hazardous substances. The recent expansion of waste management services to the northern German plant signifies Leadec’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
