  • Contract value of € 317 million; STRABAG’s share about € 66 million
  • Construction time of 30 months

Vienna, Austria, 10-12-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of a consortium, STRABAG AG, a subsidiary of Austrian publicly listed construction group STRABAG SE, has been awarded the contract to modernise the 42.2 km long railway section between Vințu de Jos and Simeria in western Romania near the city of Sibiu. The contract value amounts to € 317 million, of which STRABAG will carry out works with a volume of at least € 66 million in the area of track construction, civil engineering, earth works and road construction.

“The current line, although dual-track and electrified, is in a poor state. The speed of 90-120 km/h is to be raised to 160 km/h after completion of the construction works,” explains Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

The modernisation works comprise the renovation of the railway section, including five stations located outside of the densely populated residential areas, the rerouting of the track, the tunnelling and bridge building as well as the track bed structure. In total, more than 100 km of track will be laid. Construction is to begin in the spring of 2014 and is scheduled to last 30 months. Client is the Romanian state railway company CFR SA.

The corporate group of STRABAG SE is one of the leading European construction groups.
